I'm posting this thread after reading the thread about all the people freaking out over that medical pot convention @ the silverdome. Medical marijuana laws are a freakin joke!!! I live out here in cali where medical pot has been legal for 14 years. After 14 years, cities are still trying to fight the opening of dispensaries, and most of the clientele is made up of perfectly healthy folks who essentially pay for their medical cards. Worst of all, most of these 'legal; operations get their weed from the same sources as the dealers on the street. Ya know, the drug cartels that reign over Mexico with ruthless violence and threaten the peace of our wilderness by operating clandestine booby trapped pot gardens. Furthermore, the people who think they're buying pot 'legally' are still subject to federal posession laws!!
I guess what I'm trying to say is medical marijuana laws are nothing more than half-a## attempts at legalization. Either we legalize the stuff or we keep it against the law!! (so far the latter hasn't really worked). Marijuana is widely accepted in american society for better or worse. It's certainly no more detremental than alcohol or cigarettes, both of which are perfectly legal. If our government controlled the production and distribution of pot, the black market and all the related violence, both here and south of the border, would disappear practically overnight!!!
I don't condone smoking pot (I don't smoke), nor do i think that it is completely harmless. I also don't condone heavy drinking, smoking cigarettes, eating fast food or blowing your paycheck in a casino or a strip club! But as americans we have the right to do all of the above if that's our cup of tea. These medical marijuana laws are pointless, if we're going to legalize it we need to go all the way, then states, counties, etc. could choose to restrict as needed much like they do with booze.
So..who's with (or against) me on this?

So if we re-legalize cocaine, LSD, et al......everything's gonna be alright?

We'll just be opening up another door to a room with a new set of problems.

i completely agree with you. marijuana will eventually be legalized, that is the direction its heading anyway. never understood why alcohol is legal and pot isn't? ban alcohol too then. makes ZERO SENSE! cigarettes are more addictive than pot. why not compare cigarettes to cocaine or heroin? or yes, mcdonald's french fries for that matter. meanwhile the average american is on umpteen prescriptions of what we kid ourselves into labeling as 'Legal' drugs. but that's ok. marijuana, no that's bad! its really easy, you can only ingest drugs that make our government rich.

we have better things to waste our money on than 'pot'. how about taking that money and putting it into education??

Drugs like cocaine and herion are highly addictive and very detremental to the human body. Even though legalizing these drugs would all but eliminate a majority of the crime in this country, it would be highly irresponsible as a society to sanction the use of hard drugs like these. Marijuana, however is in a totally different class. Look at the countless people that occupy jails and prisons on marijuana charges, and look at the rising violence aligned with the lucrative pot trade! I don't see any set of problems arising from legalization that could be worse than the one's we're already faced with! Especially when marijuana is relatively harmless when compared to the aforementioned substances!

Completely agree with you too Cheeto. I don't smoke pot either, but it is definitely time for full legalization. The biggest reason I believe legalization will help is by the REDUCTION in the crime rate. The biggest drug by far & away that these Mexican cartels profit off of is marijuana. By legalizing & taxing it, the states would be getting the millions & even billions of $$ worth of revenue, rather than having it going into the hands of these organized criminal enterprises. Also it would be helping the prison overcrowding problem, since so many of the 2 million plus people incarcerated in this country are non-violent drug offenders. It's no wonder why we have so many rapists, murderers, child molesters, etc... getting out on parole early.... there's no room in our prison system to house them, because so much space is being taken up by the pot smokers!!!

Good point Eddie. Some folks do not realize that marijuana is a bit different then cocaine, heroin They don't get it. What should be noted is that NOBODY has ever died from a THC overdose. However, cocaine, heroin, & alcohol kill many folks regularly. Marijuana is still illegal because of a couple of generations of old gray-haired white folks were paranoid & outlawed it to protect special interests and the liquor trade.

Legalizing MJ will have one little benefit that might not be seen.....our children might not have to OD on the likes of "Spice", Duster, Dramamine (a hallucinogen) trying to get high when pot becomes more available for them.

They have the option of using an oral swab, which shows recent use. They have the option of a urine sample. Or, just like alcohol, they have the option of a blood sample. In order to establish physical impairment the officer also has the option of a field sobriety test. But the first step would be to make marijuana legal and the next step would be to determine a legal limit of THC in the body, so you could specifically target marijuana smokers somewhat fairly. Right now all an officer has to do is show ANY amount of an illegal drug in the body (or a legal drug but no proof of perscription) and you have a problem.
