Hillary Clinton for Vice President in 2012?
Hillary Clinton for Vice President in 2012? Biden 'Trade Talk' Murmur Could Swell

Washington's chattering class, never timid about giving advice to the president of the United States, is floating the idea of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton becoming Barack Obama's running mate in two years.

Time magazine, in an item Wednesday on its website, said Obama perhaps should consider the proposition -- "dump Biden" would be part of it -- as he begins planning for his reelection bid in 2012. "Amid two wars, a stubborn unemployment rate, an oil spill . . . might the White House need a little star power to jump-start what could be a tougher reelection than expected?" writes contributor Dan Fastenberg. "As secretary of state, Hillary Clinton has been striking the same tone as Team No Drama Obama, as opposed to the human gaffe machine." Hmm, would that be Vice President Joe Biden and his big bleeping deal health care law?

The latest round of I-don't-have-anything-better-to-do-today speculation began earlier this month when former Virginia Gov. Doug Wilder wrote in a Politico op-ed piece that Obama should replace Biden with Clinton, in part because she would help win back "middle-class independent voters," who have drifted away from the president. Working-class voters, says Wilder, have always been "more enamored of Clinton." The former governor, who is African American, didn't say it, but "working class" in this context could be code for white voters, a group Hillary ran stronger among than did Obama when they opposed each other -- sometimes bitterly -- in the 2008 primary campaign. Wilder goes on to make a case against Biden, saying his verbal blunders are not only fodder for late-night comedians but have undermined "what little confidence the public may have in him."

Default Unworkable

She can't functionally be Secretary of State and a campaigning candidate for Vice President at the same time, and that fact would make attempting to do so politically disastrous. And leaving the important position of Secretary of State for purely electoral reasons (to run for Vice President) would be politically disastrous as well.

And that's why this won't happen.

Aside from that insurmountable problem, it could work very well politically. She has a large base, whereas Biden does not. And as good a job as she's done at state, Biden would probably be very good there as well - indeed, it's more his forte than the Vice Presidency, which despite the growth of importance of the Vice President in recent decades, still is a position where talents are often wasted.

But again, the shift is just unworkable.

She isn't campaigning for SOS, John Kerry is. Biden wants out of politics, to many slip ups at this point, and he'll get out and back a run by his son.

Hillary Clinton is a glorified housewife. She has zero experience or accomplishments to her name that did not come from being married to Bill Clinton. Every job she ever held was a patronage position going all the way back to her "makework" job as a lawyer.

She still has not explained her financial questions.

Yeah, a law degree, Senior Senator from New York, and Secretary of State aren't accomplishments

A "law degree" does not qualify as experience to be President of the US.

"Senator" was GIVEN to her by New York for not divorcing Bill after he was impeached.

Hillary has been a lousy Sec of State. She has no diplomatic skills. This again was an APPOINTED position to keep her from attacking Obama from the Senate.

How do you know why it was given to her? The NY electorate made that decision. Your tag says you live in Virginia, perhaps you should decide to worry about your Senators, and not other states. That is, afterall, how the system works.

And from all accounts I've heard, the state department runs like a clock, and is far better than the Rice or Powell state departments on foreign relations.
