Do you feel the need to stock food and water for the next year or two? Guns and bullets to protect your love ones? How about investing in gold and silver due to the economy in shambles? Just curious how others feel in this environment or is there a compelling need to survive. I see more and more people buying more of one item when it is on sale and they say they are just stocking up before prices goes any higher.

I feel that way about all the time anymore. I don't stock up because for some reason my wife doesn't think we are headed to something that I just don't like to imagine may be happening. I don't think I will make it through the next few years because our leaders say that there is no reason to allow old people to live any longer than their present situation will allow them to live.
We don't own any firearms but are seriously thinking about purchasing at least one because people are coming further our way from the largest cities around and so many illegal aliens are so close to us. Maybe purchasing firearms is not a good idea since that would only lead to confrontation with government people confiscating them, and that will come about sooner than I want.

I have a camping water purifier, a couple of cases of MREs, and Coast Guard rations - enough to last my family 1 week. That's about it. Combined with dried and canned goods in the pantry I think we could last maybe 3 weeks without leaving the house. The intent is for short term survival situations - not the complete collapse of civilization.

I've been doing that since I started doing my own shopping, especially non-perishable items. Publix just had a BOGO on General Mills cereal and I brought 3 boxes (and got 3 free) not because I think the end of the world is coming but because cereal is expensive and doesn't last long in our house. If it's not on sale I got to Sam's Club and buy the big boxes for the same reason.

Excellent tactics. In addition to some savings, I like to buy in bulk at Costco/Sams so I don't have to go to the store as often (I hate shopping).
I forgot to mention that I've recently gotten into composting and rainwater collecting - the next step is a vegetable garden focusing on heirloom varieties. These are more hobbies than preparations for armageddon.
IMO, it is just common sense to have at least three weeks of food & water rations/necessities at hand. In this economic atmosphere having food stores to feed one's family gives peace of mind and a cushion when income grinds to a halt. Nature happens and hurricanes or ice storms can shut down power and roadways for extended periods. Truckers can strike or fuel to deliver to lare metropolises can become limited. Do you want to be prepared or be like those unprepared masses during Katrina and herded wherever the government chooses with no control over your condition?
I'd only recommend firearms to those willing to commit to the time and training to use them safely and accurately.
Diversification of investments is always a good idea. Can you eat gold or use it at the grocery store? Can you use bullets to place meat on the table for your family? Will investing in a metal roof this year keep you from ever having to place another on your home during your lifetime (assuming you never move) and be less expensive now than after a VAT is imposed? The practicality of which metals to place some percentage of investment must come from a personal perspective on one's financial position, needs, and skills.

i say build your safety shelters now. and make sure to stock them with dolphin safe tuna.. nothing is to big to fail..the big ponzi scheme is going to collapse.
Also; Russia has stopped all grain exports due to the worst drought in 50 years, and India has followed Russia. Now China is buying all the food products it can. All this sounds like a price spike is coming on grociers in the near future along with the Fed now printing money to buy our bonds. How much more can the US take and still have a viable culture.
