When given a choice to vote for a party I prefer there be both beer and liquor. That way everyone has something they like to drink. Hard crabs, in season, are good but you need to have hamburgers and hot dogs, too. Maybe some ribs. Definitely have sweet corn and fresh tomato slices. Not a big oyster fan but hose are good for parties when they're in season. Smoked bluefish is good year round.

Democrats here who tell me reasons I should vote Democratic, but everything they list is a reason not to.. Non stop support for the nanny state. Not a chance I could ever support such a thing..

I don't see a poll here.

But to answer your question as for why I don't normally vote GOP: social conservatism, homophobia, and religious fervor.

However I vote for the person rather than the party although I'm a registered Democrat. I have voted for Republicans before (as hard as it may be for some people on this forum to believe that). In fact, I plan to vote for John Dennis for US Congress because I think Nancy Pelosi needs to be punished via the ballot box, and also plan to vote for Abel Maldonado for Lieutenant Governor. Both are highly sane Republicans and not lunatic fringe crazies like Sharron Angle, Sarah Palin, etc. or corrupt hypocrites like John Boehner and too many others to name. I would vote for Ron Paul for president even though I do not agree with him on 100% of the issues but he does realize the military-industrial complex is leading America to insolvency. From what I know about Gary Johnson I think I could vote for him for president for the same reasons.

Sounds good! Mmmm, fresh tomato slices? How about some buffalo mozzarella to go with it?

Easy. With the Republicans and Democrats there is well over a 150 years of verifiable politicians, legislation, and foreign policy. No independent party has that kind of track record.

I liked what I saw amongst the Democratic party until 1993. That is when the "culture war" garbage was initiated and ruined the Democrats from my perspective. It also polarized the Republican party along the same lines. From that year on it was essentially the urbanites vs. the suburban/country folk. No longer was there a distinct conservative and liberal wing within each party.

That, and I tend to find economic issues to be higher priority than social issues. And since I find myself being an economic/fiscal conservative, the Republican party is the only choice I have.

Social issues. I could consider voting for Republicans if they weren't the party of "family values" and retrograde social policies. Gay equality (marriage, Don't Ask Don't Tell, etc.), sexual freedom, drug legalization, women's rights, controversial forms of free speech - most of the time it's Republicans who want to restrict these things. I believe too much in freedom to support them.
