Obama presses for longer school years - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100927/ap_on_bi_ge/us_obama - broken link)

"We have got to identify teachers who are doing well. Teachers who are not doing well, we have got to give them the support and the training to do well. And if some teachers aren't doing a good job, they've got to go," Obama said.

Now the Republicans are going to whine that Obama wants to further educate the kids. Wah wah!!

I can hear the whining already. Music to my ears.

Why "double down" and spend more money on a loser? The public school system costs more than double the cost to educate a kid in the parochial school system, but produces a better "product".

Throwing more money at the teacher's union just compounds the problem. It seems as though the Obama solution to everything is simply to throw more and more cash at it.

DARE we hope this can be the one issue we will all find common ground on? Maybe?

Over the Summer months, kids lose so much of what they've learned. It wastes so much time to review at the beginning of the school year, and kids lose the opportunity to gain more knowledge.

Plus, think of how much it costs us as a society to pay for child care and activities when kids are off for 3 months, but parents still have to work.

Honestly, we've had a few year-round schools around here. They've been proven to be better than normal public schools.

I'll pay attention to that idiot (or his supporters) when he sends his own daughters to public schools and stops fighting vouchers so average black kids can get an education similar to what his daughters are getting.

The blind support from the left is pathetic. Freakin' hypocrites.

I would disagree that more teaching and less summer downtime are actually good. I would improve the 9-10 months of schooling rather than lengthen it. We don't want to turn our kids into prisoners, which is what they'll feel if we send them off to school all year. If the "education" is wearing off and kids are forgetting it three months later, then lengthening the education period is not the answer. This is one where quality should outweigh quantity.

Yes that's why States that spend more on teachers score better in scholastic achievement tests..LOL

The right wing plan to get the middle class back on it's feet......pay teachers less. Spend less money on public eduction....LOL

It's so pathetic ..it's funny.

Honestly I think we should just do away with schooling altogether and make homeschooling the norm. Any teacher will tell you that most of class time is wasted on classroom management. Students could learn three times as much by the same age if they didn't have to sit through classes that are mostly spent on telling Johnny to be quiet and Sarah to pay attention.

Homeschool teachers could taylor teaching methods to the students' learning methods. And with homeschool, each group of kids would probably only need 2-3 hours a day tops, so one homeschool teacher could go to three different homes a day. And kids could self-teach the rest, by using methods like pairing up to study and then teach the material.

To add, the social atmosphere distracts from learning. Instead of giving learning a social structure, it makes much more sense to have structured time for learning, and then structured time for socializing with other kids. Kids could also then be able to take a short break when they need one, or take vacations when they need one, so that when they return to work, they are much more productive, rather than being forced to "pay attention" for time periods that far exceed their attention span.

This is terrible!
All patriotic Americans should pull their kids out of school, otherwise they may become indoctrinated commies.
