I have friends who make that and qualify. The bar is low, but it's not that low.

I eat. I eat what is in my freezer and cupboard. I don't eat what I'd like to eat but I eat. Sometimes the refrigerator is pretty empty before I have enough money to buy food.

I've done the calculations online and I don't qualify for food stamps.
And, honestly I don't want food stamps. What I want is a better job and I will find one.

But, I think you people should work as a cashier in a grocery store for a while. I'm very sure that it would open your eyes.

Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

I eat what is in my freezer and cupboard too. If I didn't replace what was in there regularly, there wouldn't be anything in there. Do you have a cupboard that grows its own food?

I don't know what you want me to say...

I just did the calculator again. Making minimum wage, I do not qualify for Food Stamps. (and I honestly don't want Food Stamps)

You do what you have to do to get by.

I know that there are plenty of people like me who go to work every day and are barely getting by -- who don't qualify for Food Stamps.

I still believe that the Food Stamp program is not meant for buying steak & lobster.

Maybe I'm jealous.

I hope your food budget is more than $120 a month. It probably is.

IMO, I hope it was decided this is a silly question - didn't see that option on the survey!

Seriously, someone's worried about wedding cakes? (Ensuing weddings likely disqualify some food stamp recipients! )

Well, then, what about ginger-bread houses?

Nope.

A wedding should not be about a $500 cake. I don't object to there being some allowance for non-essential foods, but I'm talking maybe $50 worth per year.

If poor people want to be extravagant, they can do it on their own dime.

FWIW, hubby and I spent around $20 for customized cupcakes for our wedding, and they were a hit.

Not if you are childless in Oregon, max there for one person is about $1150 a month (`$13500/yr)

That should win most of the Repub side since they're so "for" marriage.

"In August of 2013, about 808,244 Oregonians in 443,501 households received food benefits. The average monthly benefit was about $235 per household. The benefits paid to households are paid 100% by the federal government, and the cost of administering the program is paid 50% by the federal government and 50% by the state."
