I was Republican mainly due to what I learned in High School. I basically wanted less government overall and the republican party seemed to favor that. However, recently that is not the case. Instead they insist on fighting a failed war and sending countless Americans die a pointless death. What a shame really what we have gotten to. It is honestly a matter of time before we attack Iran. If we don't attack Iran in the next 5 years, I will be truly shocked.

I for one wasn't led by the "lean government" claptripe of the 2000 race. We all knew that Bush wanted Shock and Awe, and it was either War for Oil or War for Cleveland (Kucinich and the liberals spending money on inner city ratholes and union patronage). When it comes down to throwing money at our inner cities, or bombing other people's inner cities ... I was enthusiastically for the latter!!! and we even got MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

I didn't realize we had to pay for it, too. We were promised to be "out by Christmas." That didn't work in World War I, either. Doh.
Thankfully, we've found a way to raise energy prices (and by extension, food prices and health care, etc prices) as well.
Goodbye middle class! Wow, it really does work like in the textbooks!

Considering that I never learn my lesson, it's a good thing that George Bush can't be reelected.
I'm thinking about not voting in the next election ... it's only fair that I refrain while you clean up the Neocon "experiment."
In retrospect, as a former Neocon, I should say "I'm sorry" ... but you only want me to hand over the broom.
Hello!!! I'm a Neocon, I don't clean up messes, I only make them.

Phone's ringing ... I've secured a full-time appointment at the George Bush Center for World Peace!
Until next time, friends.

I hope Americans won't blindly believe what the government tells them anymore, but I doubt it. Today there are still clueless folks who believe the lies told about Iraq. Remember WMD in Iraq?

I'd rather give my tax dollars to Joe Blow that sits on the sofa all day and drinks a six pack every night...

Why?

Because giving my tax dollars to Enron and Halliburton didn't provide jobs in this country. At least if Joe Blow gets my money, he'll spend it in his neighborhood stores and increase the amount of money circulating here in the US, and that creates jobs!

Corporate welfare makes me sick, especially the type of corporate welfare practiced over the last 7 years. We aren't supporting companies that can grow and expand here in the USA, providing more jobs and creating a better economy. We're supporting the oil/gas/defense industries that are taking our dollars overseas. Bill Clinton supported a lot of bills that spent government money right here in the USA -- like the bill that provided salaries for more police officers across the USA (cut under Bush).

Anyway, I think the fact the Midwest and the South overwhelmingly voted for Bush is a reflection of the poor state of education in the USA. Of course, when you have states like Kansas that prefers to handicap their students by NOT teaching evolution -- what do you expect?

I've always said this: If the government gave every family $1000 to buy a new refrigerator (Made in the USA), you'd see tons of refrigerator factories springing up across the US! Rich people wouldn't be able to build enough refrigerator factories! They would all be clambering to build factories! The rich are smart enough to earn their money! That is why the government shouldn't be just giving it to them. It's better for the government to give welfare to the little guys and not hand out corporate welfare unless it is totally deserved (like in the case of disasters when corporations need money to get back on their feet or in cases where an incubator business could become something huge for the US, like Microsoft and Intel).

I'm totally fed up with corporate welfare in this country.

You're right, the Republicans are not the TAX and Spend Party. They are the Dine and Dash Party. We are more in debt now then we ever have been, and yet we have had a Republican administration for almost 8 years. That old stand by that Republicans are fiscally conservative is a joke! (and so is Bush). I'm not very happy with most members of the Democratic Party either right now, by the way.

I grew up in a Democratic household. Working class parents from the Pittsburgh PA area (Scot-Irish) or WASP and Slovak-Catholic)

Born in Washington DC. Have lived in Connecticut most of my life. From my background I learned that the republican party for the most past has always favored the wealthy and corporations at the expense of the less fortunate.

Today the republican's do have many wealthy voters- but no more then the Democrats actually. In my home of Connecticut- a very rich state where Democrats have a strong majority in voter registration. The paradox here in Connecticut and New England is that be you ultra wealthy, middle class or urban poor- people tend to vote the same; Democrat and progressive.

The GOP relies now on mostly white; less educated voters in the mid and deep south, who are not wealthy. The GOP attracts these people who have strong religious views, are anti gay rights and marriage, know little about science and have a narrow perspective of the world. Strangely enough, many of these folks vote against their own interests primarily because their conservatives cultural beliefs get in the way of their economic needs. Issues like flag burning, patriotism, guns, gays, abortion are more important then the environment, stem cell research, and personal liberty.

the 'cultural wars' of the last 20 or so years- have separated the two parties more- at least outside of the northeast.

The Democratic party I learned was the party of the worker, disenfranchised, and stood for reform. FDR was the paragon, as well as Truman and JFK.

I think today, these feelings about the two parties have been reinforced even more- but now from a cultural perspective the republican party resists change as never before. It is mostly anti science, and relies on a very narrow thinking base for its support- who are very regressive and anti change.

Economically; the republican party harks back to the gilded ages of the late 19th century- the time of trusts, monopolies and robber barons- before the then progressive republican party began to regulate these too powerful corporations. After about 1912 the republican party began to become increasing pro business and conservative; thats when Teddy Roosevelt bolted from the party- and Progressive Democrat Woodrow Wilson became President. Since this time the Republican party has been mostly very pro business- while the Democratic party very reformist on the side of the worker. However on social issues the GOP remained moderate up until about the mid 70s- when it became increasingly conservative and dominated by intolerant religious groups.

I am Conservative first and foremost and I have always voted that way because I am for the ideals of responsibility, hard work, fewer government handouts, less government intrusion in the individuals life, a robust economy, common sense, and because of history. I am also sick of the hypocrisy that comes from the left and their unwillingness to work with others, the lies, spin and deceit just get to me so much too.

History has shown that socialized government programs don't work, socialism and communism don't work. While I think that the Democrats helped the workers by developing Unions, they now abuse the power of those same Unions. Much of the same can be said as far as abuse of power goes. Democrats in government today do not represent the people (well the same can be said for 99% of the politicians), the only seek to enslave people to the state by a means of controlling them and for power.

I am for lower taxes and the Republican tax cuts have only helped people. The problem is that for all of the helpful tax cuts, the Bill Clinton's of the world has record tax hikes at the time which by his own admission he raised too much but he wouldn't cut after that.

In this day and age, I would rather make something of myself than to have someone else try to make me into something.
