Overall, I believe that the current policy is a violation of human rights, when it comes right down to it, however, there is one reason, that I relate to from those who want to keep the status quo in place.
I know, myself, I would feel very uncomfortable if I was naked and showering next to a man that I knew was gay. I would either close my eyes, shower at rapid speed and get out, or walk out.
Even though, those that say this point is weak, say that gays can control themselves in that situation and don't won't even look at any thing that would make someone uncomfortable....
I know in the past, the few times that I've been to a nude beach and I see gay men there, I cringe.....
so my point again and enlighten me if I'm out of bounds here, is that is the only reason, that I can see as somewhat legit, for keeping gays out the military (even though someone could say, get around that by having seperate changing and showering areas, but that would get too messy and is like the segergated armed forces back in the pre 1940's)..
I am open to being wrong on this, since oeverall, I think the positives, outweigh the cons, if "don't ask, don't tell" was overturned, but that's one big negative, IMO.
It's not about the heebee-geebees, its about trying to maintain order and discipline while trying to make sure you do not assign troops in barracks rooms with same gender as their sexual preference.
The way I see it, you wouldn't house men and women together would you? Don't want sexual tensions or stuff like that going on. How is this different from 2 men, at least one being gay? IMO, it's not if you really think about it.
That's not a legitimate reason. That's a childish reason. At some point in everyone's lives, we check out someone else in a communal shower/spa/sauna, etc. I don't care if you're gay or straight, that's just the way life is. Please get over yourself thinking you're all that assuming every person is checking you out or address your body issues you obviously have if you get so uncomfortable if someone looks at you in a shower (you meaning you in general terms).

Could they have not used this same arguement back before Truman, when they wanted to keep whites and black separate?
The way I see it, DADT guarantees there will be closeted homosexuals with you in the shower. Basically, if you are ever naked with another person of the same gender there is a possibility they are gay. If that is a personal line in the sand for you then you should avoid ever being naked among others because the odds are good that someone will peak at your goodies even if they AREN'T gay. Straight people may look at you and be silently mocking you for your inadequacies or the shape of things.
The thoughts in another persons head doesn't effect you in any way. You really don't want to know what people REALLY think about you for example.

I'm not sure if it is or not.....
I'm sure I've showered, with someone NOT knowing they were gay.....
my point here is, showering in a barracks with someone who I KNEW was gay.....I dunno.
I feel more comfortable, showering with women (even if they weren't that attractive), as opposed to showering with gays.....

Then don't shower with other people. Simple!
