Why wouldn't he apologize, what was done was horrific, and given that this has just come to light, to offer no apology would be reprehensible.

If a wrong has been done, an apology is in order. Your perception and moral compass is out of whack.

It was 70 years ago!! No other president felt the need to drag up the past and be so spineless. Maybe he should start worrying more about our present problems!

That's what happens when you drink the Conservative Kool-Aid. One becomes so blinded by hatred it affects a person rationality.

Posts like this are indicative of "American Exceptionalism" the belief that America has a right to dominate, intimidate, and disrespect other countries and other people without respect to their culture and their traditions and America can do no wrong. These are the original "Ugly Americans".

US apologizes for infecting Guatemalans with STDs in the 1940s - CNN.com

"The United States apologized Friday for a 1946-1948 research study in which people in Guatemala were intentionally infected with sexually transmitted diseases.

President Barack Obama called his Guatemalan counterpart Friday 'offering profound apologies and asking pardon for the deeds of the 1940s'"
Are you freaking kidding me? If anything we should be apologizing for, this would be one of them.

I don't see the problem here. When we actually do something wrong, why not apologize?

Why would a leader of a nation NOT apologize for such an act on people of another country?

Lord knows why anyone would find fault with an apology even if it was Obama’s.

College professor uncovers America's 'abhorrent' STD experiments in Guatemala - CSMonitor.com

The problem is not about an apology but "why" and "who" is that sick in our government at the time to do this type of thing? Criminal action by those in charge of a program, they had no right to do the testing on those people.

Questions...

1. Will the Guatemalan Govt of that time also apologize to their present day people? It seems highly unlikely that a bunch of US medical researchers would simply show up and start infecting and then monitoring obviously selected "patients" without permission from, and/or collusion with, local authorities.

2. How much was the Guatemalan Govt paid to permit this research?

3. How much "compensation" will accompany this apology?

.

But I have no idea why.

The USA acted under the authority of the Guatemalan government. Guatemala was a partner in the research.
