"The countries that stimulated hardest, like South Korea, came out of recession first."

Look what good the U.S. stimulus has done for the U.S.

There are claims we didn't go far enough with stimulus but I'm on the fence about it. Stimulus covering tangible infrastructure makes more sense to me than the shallower piece meal shovel ready projects at the inception. If we're going for another round of stimulus it really needs more value/ substance at this point. If we're not it's time to hunker down for a very long winter.

You realize they're trying to fix the problems that were CAUSED by over-spending, over-taxing, etc., right?

We're trying to be more and more like Europe and all of Europe is trying to be less and less like Europe. They tried that route and realized that they've all got horribly failing economies because of their leftist policies.

The UK is a wreck and they're trying to undo what they did to cause the problems.

The US was upset months ago when the UK decided to go the austerity route rather than the printing press route.

The US is now standing all alone with QE. And now it looks like we may have the rumblings of a currency war which will not bode well with the US and our printing til everyone is rich.

I think the UK is doing the right thing and is also siding with the other European countries who are also on the austerity track.

Just a matter of time before it hits our shores..just a matter of time. You cannot print your way out of debt.

No one can disprove the "not enough" stimulus theory. How can it be disproved? $2 trillions spent, transfer, and it didn't work because we didn't stimulus enough. Then we add another $2, again, it didn't work. Against, we didn't stimulus enough. So next, we put out $5 trillions, uh-oh, failed again. And against, we didn't stimulus enough. Go on and on.

And no one the would consider they may be wrong. Oh wait... why do I even have sure a silly thought. Politicians never wrong.

That almost sounds like Labour Party threat. Are you afraid of the labour unions losing power in Europe and the US by weaning people of the taxpayer teat of social entitlements? SEIU shill?

Withdrawl is rarely pretty, much like an alcoholic or drug addict going through the DT's, people will riot. In the long run the following more self-sufficient generations will make for a stronger, leaner, more fiscally fit nation.

Edited to add: Sorry to read about Margaret Thatcher's illness. God speed in her recovery. She was a strong PM of good moral character. Your new PM Cameron isn't qualified to shine Thatcher's sensible pumps. Over here he'd be considered a far leftist.

Are you doing an impression of a Republican, because it sure sounds like one!?

The issue here in the US I think is not related to those people on welfare, which is what I think you are really alluding to, it's related to large corporations that were too big to fail. In other words, corporate welfare. Both forms of welfare are insidious. I can't understand why Republicans find throwing trillions at private business is acceptable while throwing billions at people in need (the unemployed for example) is not.

Yes, America needs significant spending cuts. Close the schools if we have to, just like they did during the Depression. Close the foreign military bases and bring the troops home. People will have to buck up, move in with other families, lose their homes, commute using public transit. Yes, for many people it will not be pleasant, but then so swings the pendulum.

(Added: Corporations don't riot in the streets. They have a direct phone line to Congress, so of course it's going to look like a bunch of crybabies in the eyes of the Republicans).

At the exact same time, if We the People have to make sacrifices, then businesses will have to do the same. No more work visas for foreigners, no bonuses for Wall Street and CEOs who aren't hiring people, etc. This should not boil down to an argument over people vs. business. One should not be favored over the other since both are necessary (though I do favor extreme regulation of private enterprise since I think they are the real criminals in this country).

But what if the economy is being controlled by others and what if any strategy for improvement can be neutralized by those others to serve their whims?
