Where's the story because it is absolutely clear that both the Michigan's Fair Housing Act of 1968 and Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 specifically excludes anyone renting a room or an apartment in they themselves reside.
I think if the women is a Bible thumper then she probably wants the same as a roomate. And let's face it, anyone other than another thumper is going to be impractical for both.
But if she is some who is trying to eliminate Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, or other non-Christian just because she does not want them, then I would say we are indeed talking about a violation.
Send an African-American Bible thumper and see what happens.
So are those sites who match people like match.com or others suppose to just say looking for a mate? No qualifications? That would be silly and no one would use them.
This woman is in no way violating the law. Yes, section 201 which you quoted says:
564.201 Unfair housing practices. [M.S.A. 26.1300(201)]
Sec. 201. It is an unfair housing practice for an owner, a real estate broker or real estate
salesman, or any other person as defined in this act:
(b) To refuse to engage in a real estate transaction with a person because of race, color, religion
or national origin.
(f) To publish or advertise, directly or indirectly, an intent to make a limitation, specification or
discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin.
However, the next section of the law (which you didn't link to but should have) says:
564.301 Exclusions. [M.S.A. 26.1300(301)]
Sec. 301. Section 201 does not apply:
(a) To the rental of a housing accommodation in a building which contains housing
accommodations for not more than 2 families living independently of each other, if the owner or
lessor or a member of his family resides in 1 of the housing accommodations.
(b) To the rental of a room or rooms in a single family dwelling by the owner or lessor if he or a
member of his family resides therein.
I bolded and underlined the relevant language. It seems clear to me section 201 of the law does not apply in this case. The state seems to be misapplying it.
I would think she should be excluded from who she chooses to be roommates with, but does this exclude her from the rules for advertising?

I believe that the state must investigate formal housing discrimination complaints. A private fair housing group complained and the state must follow up.

I do not believe match.com is involved in real estate transactions.

What is this country coming to when individuals are not allowed to pick and choose who they want living in their home with them ?
[i]Chapter 2[indent][b](f) To publish or advertise, directly or indirectly, an intent to make a limitation, specification or discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin. What do you guys think?
Does this mean web dating services/bulletin boards/classifieds can't state preferences either?
