I don't expect there to be a 5 month extension this time but I do expect some that is at least 60 days so that the new congress has to deal with any longterm commitments. The cost for a Tier 5 hasn;t been put outhere yet since the CBO hasnt scored wither Tier 5 bill, but it will probably be double the cost of the Tier 3 and 4 bill. Which IIRC was about 4 billion and funded with the federal unemployment FUTA tax.
These are your OPINIONS. And that's fine. You are entitled to your opinions. But to insist that what you say is a certainty because that's how YOU read the tea leaves does not make it reality.

Opyelie
asked for a link to someone saying that the issue would be raised. We still haven't seen a link to a statement by anyone in CONGRESS who is committing to raising and/or passing the extensions -- and who has the ability to actually vote for them.

BTW, just as you are entitled to your opinions, the rest of us are also entitled to our opinions -- even when we dare not to accept what you say just because you say it.

toledoblade.com -- The Blade ~ Toledo Ohio

Sounds like if they can find $5B-$6B a month to offset the costs, that the Repub's actually want to extend UB. Senator Reid states that a small extension is possible before they expire but mentioned the Bush tax extensions for the middle class as his carrot.

Not much of a carrot -- continuing tax cuts for middle class is the one thing everyone on both sides of the aisle agrees on.

The issues for Republicans is extending tax cuts for those earning over $250,000 -- and since the election, they have upped the ante, saying they want all tax cuts to be extended "permanently."

Reid continues to evade that issue. And this morning Obama flipflopped, saying that he was still absolutely opposed to extending tax cuts at that level for even a temporary time -- even though he suggested in interviews earlier this week that he might be negotiable on that position.

It seems more like the Republicans will try to use extending unemployment benefits as their carrot to get the Democrats to agree to the Republicans' now escalating demands on extending tax cuts.

It certainly doesn't look good. They will quietly and without announcement, add to the welfare budget to cover the 5 million people and their families. I hope America is not hoping that this new DC will get anything done. The Repub's could take the $70B a year they would save by letting the tax cuts expire for those $200k/$250k and over and pay for the UB extension for a year.

Agreed! Plus, the interesting thing about Obama's comments this morning -- made from India -- was that he added that he couldn't see extending those tax cuts for the $250k+ earners and then trying to borrow money from other countries to cover an increasing US deficit. So he is apparently also feeling international pressure to rein in tax cuts and to control the deficit.

It doesn't matter what the Senate or House does on the Bush tax breaks, Obama has stated several times he will not sign a bill the gives the rich $700B over 10 years. So really the Dem's don't have a carrot. The Repub's have stated that $5-$6B has to be found somewhere else to pay for a short unemployment extension. The Dem's will say they are emergency funds and nothing will get done before they expire. Its not what I want to see but its all heading in that direction. The Dem's will become the party of "no".

Argh - temp tax cuts for the rich. Baloney. Kicking the can down the road. The intent - regardless of the expiration ten years later - always was to make them permanent. The GOP never had ANY intention of letting them expire, no matter how good or bad the economy, and will FIGHT TO THE DEATH to protect those tax cuts.

This is going to be a very interesting fight. I think 'short' is the operative word here on the extension without any commitments on either side on the tax cuts.

When is it enough that places have signs that say unemployed need not apply.

When is it enough? that jobs keep being sent out of the country stay home?

When is it enough. When someone between age 40-55 can go and even get a 8$ a hour job.

When is it enough? when there are not 6 people for every job that has a opening.

THAT'S WHEN IT IS ENOUGH!
right on
