Well then lets' understand who is really poor in America when it comes to children:
In 2001 there were 44.09 million American children categorized as White Alone Not Hispanic and 4.195 million lived below the poverty level or 9.5%. In 2009 there were 40.917 million White American children and 4.850 million of these children or 11.9% below the poverty level.
In 2001 there were 11.556 million categorized as Black Alone children and 3.492 million or 30.2% were below the poverty level. In 2009 there were 11.282 million categorize as Black Alone children and 4.033 million or 35.7% were below the poverty level.
In 2001 there were 12.763 million categorized as Hispanic Any Race children and 3.570 million or 28.0% were below the poverty level. In 2009 there were 16.965 million categorized as Hispanic Any Race children and 5.610 million or 33.1% were below the poverty level.
In 2001 there were 3.215 million categorized as Asian and Pacific Islander and 369,000 or 11.5% were below the poverty level. In 2009 there were 3.996 million categorized as Asian Alone in Combination children and 531,000 or 13.3% were below the poverty level.
If you look at these number one thing is immediately apparent. The overall poverty rate for ALL American children has increased from 2001 to 2009.
The population of American children categorized as White Alone Not Hispanic declined by about 7.2% from 2001 to 2009, however the increase in of the number of children below the poverty level was 15.6%
The population of American children categorized as Black Alone children declined by about 2.4% increase in of the number of children below the poverty level was 15.5%
The population of American children categorized as Hispanic Any Race increase by 32.9% increase in of the number of children below the poverty level was 57.1%
The population of American children categorized as Asian Alone in Combination increase by 24.3% increase in of the number of children below the poverty level was 43.9%
The percentage of Black Americans in poverty is higher than other racial groups. However, for all this angst about poverty and Black Americans and Black American children the increase in the number of Black American children below the poverty level was the LOWEST amongst the children any major racial group in the country.
The fact that there isn’t greater attention given BLACK AMERICANS but the fact that EVERY GROUP IN AMERICA HAS SEEN INCREASES IN IT’S POVERTY LEVEL IN THE PAST EIGHT YEARS is indicative that this issue is more driven by stereotypes, falsehoods, media bluster and prejudice than it is by FACTS.
If every racial group in America has more people below the poverty level from 2001 to 2009 increased then why are Black Americans singled out when it comes to poverty, when the numbers are rising faster for other groups?
