What an oppressive view of today's America. Just reading that comment made me feel like I was almost suffocating.
Here is what I'm thinking...DADT means homosexuals won't be discharged if they are discovered to be gay. It doesn't mean they will necessarily have a plesant time of it if it's discovered they are gay. Each person will have to decide for themself whether it's something they want to share, and whether they want to deal with the consequences of their fellow soldiers. I bet there aren't too many that will want to "make a show of it", especially if they feel others are going to resent them.
Like all things, this is going to have to play out however it plays out. Broad brushes and generalizations can't be used here. Case by case, if and when there is a problem, will be how it's handled, just like when heterosexuals find themselves on the bad side of someone because of who they are....even if who they are is just a jackass.
If they are not mentally tough enough to shower with a gay man then they shouldn't be in the military.People like you want to sickly believe that every gay man stares at other straight men in the showers which is NOT TRUE. We are not all sexual deviants you know. Do you think gays will set up chairs in the shower stall and leer at the straight dudes all evening? That the gay soldiers will get all giddy and snap straight guys in the butts with towels? Straight men have showered with gay men all the time and nothing happens. Nothing magical is going to happen and no change will occur.

Since the left has decided to force patriotic heterosexuals who have no desire to share showers, restrooms and barracks with homosexuals, straits who presently serve will leave the military in droves.

At the time this novel was written, totalitarian Marxist-Leninist governments like the ones in Mao's China and Stalin's Russia had emerged to provided real world examples of Orwell's fictional - though hardly implausible - Oceania. In all cases, real or imagined, for the interests of those who govern to be placed before those of the individual, the logical thought process of the individual, to the degree possible, must be controlled. This is because the ideas used to justify all-powerful centralized governments are themselves logically flawed, self-contradictory and vulnerable to exposure as such. In the real world, as in Orwell's Oceania, top-down centralized government and individual thought compete and are mutually exclusive.
Today in America, gays self-identify as a third gender thereby making them fit neither of the already segregated genders within the military. With that in mind, we have now received a new directive from the PC social engineers that no problem exist with allowing this "third gender" to serve openly and unsegregated in barracks, restrooms and shower facilities though seperation of males and females for these purposes has aways been the policy of the military and will continue. As the left has done in so many totalitarian states in the past, those who carry the torch of statism in the US today have fought tooth and nail to force others to accept an idea that is obviously illogical and inconsistent with other equally supported leftist concepts. They will likely get away with this breach of common sense because repeal of DADT and the new PC policy which will replace it will be forced onto the only citizens who have, for the purposes of military service, voluntarily given up their right to openly challenge the state's official positions. This means that for the social engineers on the left, the military has become their own Oceania in which truth is what they say it is and may be changed from time to time as fits new policies.
Of course, as in Oceana, other conflicting liberal whackadoodle concerns remain unchanged. A casual remark, compliment, look or smile, no matter how innocently intended, is still considered sexual harassment if taken by the recipient to be such. Gays who are as sexually excited by their own sex as heterosexuals are by the opposite sex will now be free to reveal their sexuality then dress and shower with heterosexuals who, while objecting to essentially being forced to perform a nude revue for gay service members, will still be required to get naked with them, but this shall in way be considered sexual harrassment. Furthermore, males and females will continue be segregated by gender with separate barracks, restrooms and showers since forcing females to shower with males would violate their rights. Finally, the PC thought police have concluded that anyone who points out the obvious glaring inconsistencies involved with sexual harassment laws, military gender segregation and gays openly serving in the military is a hater.

Sorry to break it to you, but it passed. You're going to have to find something else to do other than treating this group of people like second rate citizens. I'm not sure what country you think you live in, but this country, America, everybody stands equal before our Constitution.

Soldiers aren't so weak that they can't handle being near a gay person and *gasp* KNOWING he/she is gay. If they are that weak then maybe they shouldn't be soldiers.
