100,000 is a lot of horses. Either time to reopen the slaughter houses or get out the .22 rifle!
New study on abandoned horses reveals the size of the problem | Lu-Ann's Kentucky News Review | Kentucky.com (http://www.kentucky.com/2010/12/20/1573805/new-study-on-abandoned-horses.html - broken link)
Good luck killing a horse with a .22. It can be done, but only if you're very close and know exactly where to hit: Between the eyeballs and about an inch up. Remember, your target is about the size of a walnut and underneath some heavy bone.
It's really sad. The rescue organizations can't keep up. The one I'm involved with provides homes for unwanted performance horses but they can't take in all of them.
Like many pets but more so with horses, people say... awww how cute, how pretty, lets get one. Then it dawns on them how much cost and care is involved in keeping livestock.
Of course I would hate to speculate what the abandoned dog and cat population is in this country.

I agree it can't be that ALL these people that own these horses are cruel or abusive. Some are just facing such hard economic times that they can't properly take care of their animals.

I really do think that's a lot of it.
Last spring my sister adopted a beautiful little horse who had been part of a BLM roundup--original owner was a family who lost their jobs.

Yes, but they should've sold them or given them away sooner...rather than abandon them later which is very cruel.
I learned years ago what a financial drain horses are especially if properly cared for....I got rid of mine ...
But it's a sad fact that animals suffer with this economy....,too
They are used for meat in many countries. Perhaps it's time to reconsider the idea.
