The 1940's- the early 1960's almost every man was enlisted in the military and went through boot camp and eventually serving our nation.

The 40's through the 60's saw enormous prosperity.
Could it have anything to do with the values and discipline implanted by our military?

In today's public sector, the values and discipline are long gone.
Very few hold the same pride in our nation, nor have the discipline to be self sufficient, because you may not be able to rely on your buddy.

In place of parents instilling disciple, in some cases, yes. However, we do not live in a vacuum and prosperity is not tied to discipline and the military experience alone. Take a hard look at the percentage of the population today paying nothing in income taxes and that percentage taking either state or federal welfare aid. The mindset of our society at large is one of dependency rather than independence and personal accountability, fostered greatly by our government, IMO.

Edited to add: I know folks who have been a lifetime in their military careers who are the hardest working people you'll ever meet. I've also met those who have served since the 1990's who are blood sucking leaches on society and commit fraud to get that monthly check for their kids. In the end it comes down to the character of the individual, IMO.

I am against all things military.

The US is way too militaristic already, that is a problem in my view...

Also, women - more than half the population - were never enlisted like men, anyway...

Your current crisis has all sorts of causes, none of which you can remove by military service.

If people need the military to be proud of their nation, you have far greater problems...

The only causual relationship between the military and prosperity is the fact that during WW2, everyone who wasn't in the military had a job supporting the war effort. Also after WW2, since we won the war and Europe and asia were decimated, the fact that our industrial base was intact, there were unlimited job opportunities for the average citizen and the American industrial business community. The third factor was the generous benefits given to those who served IE: low interest home loans with no down payment, subsidized education grants, etc. If anything, post WW2 demonstrated the effectiveness of educating the populus as being a major force and driving factor in economic prosperity for the next 40 years.

As much as the right wing nationalistic faction would like to make a tie in between the discipline inherent in military service and economic prosperity this is not the case IMO. Upon returning from the war, every soldier had a job waiting for them or went to college, bought a house, cheap, had a new chevy in the driveway and had babies. They don't call them boomers for nothing. It was boom times for sure. The results of winning a war and having the nation left intact verses the total destruction of the rest of the world economy.

A lot of Americans won't share your opinion, either...

They make good traffic signals when they are set to music.

We could use one of them here at the corner of Neil Avenue and Last Chance Gulch.

Sometimes being outside, looking in, can give one a better perspective of a nation's "forest" without being hampered by the "trees" of partisan ideology and agenda.

Sorry, but the the U.S. military was segregated and not a shinning example of values during the 40's through 60'. Jim Crow was ever present in the U.S. military during WWII and the 60's.

Jim Crow and Black Segregation in World War II

Nonsense. People are no different than they've ever been.

And in my experience, military values and discipline helps most, but not all. Some people leave the military dumber than they were when they came in. As for me, it helped me tremendously.
