POLK COUNTY, Fla. - Basketball hoops that were removed from Polk jails and given to churches have rubbed some local atheists the wrong way.
After Polk County's Grady Judd declared he was removing basketball equipment from jails because it wasn't a place for fun and games, the Atheists of Florida are reportedly protesting the Sheriff's donation of the county-owned equipment to churches.
For a group of people who claim to not believe in God, they sure do complain a lot when God helps out his people.
But it this case is was a sheriff, not god. Actually, in all cases it's a human and not god. Werid.
I don't care where these hoops went personally. But people (not god) do need to be aware of what they are doing when charged with tax monies. We do have rules for a reason. And you really can't complain when they are enforced without looking silly.
Inmates in the Polk County Jail get three hours of recreation time per week.
Judd went on about how he wasn't in the business of catering to criminals.
"Inmates come to jail because they violated the law," he said.
Except for the ones who haven't. I couldn't help but remind Judd that many of the people in his jail were there on a pre-trial basis. They weren't convicted of anything.
"There's a mixture," he said.
"So they're not all criminals," I said.
"They're all there because of probable cause that they committed a crime," he said. "The solution is if you don't like county jail, stay out of it."
