So let me see, you could work hard to get a good education and eventually a good job so you can earn your keep. Or you can work some minimum wage job and then get an EBT card, section 8, medi-cal, and now to top it off, even cheap broadband and a netbook. Which path do you think most people are going to take?

Fortunately for everyone involved, most Americans choose the former.

I guess why not. They are already getting free cell phone service.

I like how everyone is more concerned with poor people getting internet than the creation of a media monopoly.

Here is the press release. FCC (http://www.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2011/db0118/DOC-304134A1.pdf - broken link)

Looks like there is an emphasis on providing Spanish language, more children's programing, fostering video competition, protecting online competition like "Hulu", and adding local news content, in addition to the low cost services. Comcast has committed to provide 10 new independent channels within eight years on its digital tier. The deal also says they will continue to provide at least as much news programming as is currently shown. It doesn't say what direction that news content will take, whether liberal, conservative, or otherwise.

Here is some more information.

Cablevision-Fox Spat May Raise Hurdles for Comcast-NBC - Bloomberg

I don't see anything to support the OP's original conditions.

Isn't it something like 47% of Americans do not pay federal income tax?

Why don't poor folk go to the public library if they want to use the internet?

It tends to be the inner city people that choose the latter. Lack of : mother and father households, discipline, and good morals , cause many of these people to not excel to a hundredth of their potential.
