If you want to declare a winner from CPAC, the annual conservative convention that wrapped up over the weekend, a good case could be made for Barack Obama, mainly because the proceedings underscored the degree to which every likely GOP presidential candidate has serious deficiencies.

Here's what I think is going to be really tough for the R's--their base is really divided. They have the far right tea party/social conservatives who are super active on a local level and influence primaries heavily--they're going to want a far right candidate. Then you have the establishment R's who aren't nearly as conservative, the libertarians, and finally they need to appeal to more moderate swing voters to win. I have no idea how any one human being can cross all those lines--they won solely on angst over the economy last time--so it could be interesting for them.

You underestimate the dissatisfaction with Obama. Anyone, short of Palin, would unify the party and attract independents. We saw in the midterm with the same dynamic, that the Dems got crushed.

There is a big enormous gaping suck hole out of BO's approval rating in the last year and a half.

Amen to that; Obama lost the independents in November, and has zero chance of getting them back.

That one fact will ensure his demise next year.

Oh, how lovely it would be to see a Palin/Bachmann ticket in 2012...I can see all the "Palin-Bachmann Overdrive" jokes right now.

Th real vacuum is Oama's own polcies that evenh he is ryig to reverse now. The real probelm is that he spebnt alot of money creating a hgue deficit with no real rsults. Now is is caught up in trying to try to say he is for cuttig when it all a shell game.He may find he has actaully started severe cuts to everythng he said was his speical interest.

Obama's approval rating is going back up and he is beating all four top GOP challengers in polling right now if the election were held today. As the economy continues to improve Obama's numbers keep going up and will do so as the unemployment rate comes down. This is why conservatives hate seeing the economy improve.
