Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
We are a nation of immigrants. Closing the doors in the face of those who want a better life for themselves and their families goes against one of the most important things that made us great!
You do realize that for many of these people who are currently in this country illegally, they would never be able to migrate here legally? If you don't have family in the US, and you're not a particularly skilled worker, and you're from most Latin American countries, the US is closed. I'm sure your Russian grandparents did not face an environment where it was literally impossible to migrate to the US legally, as most illegal immigrants in the US do today.

So is every other country in the world.
They are allowed to hold their immigration policy.
Article 67 of Mexico's Population Law says, "Authorities, whether federal, state or municipal ... are required to demand that foreigners prove their legal presence in the country, before attending to any issues."
LuckyGem: Even everyday Mexican citizens are empowered to make Citizen Arrests of people they SUSPECT as being in the country illegally.
kerrymac: and illegals are not allowed to protest...........Hmmm we should implement that!
I haven't voiced any opinion about SB1070 in this thread. My sole point was about the guy who said that his grandparents immigrated here legally, so everybody else should too.
My point is that for many people, it is literally impossible to immigrate here legally. For somebody who sees employment and opportunity a couple hundred miles away that they could never get at home, it can be understandable why they would want to sneak across the border. That doesn't excuse illegal immigration or make it ok, nor does it justify the illegal exploitation of these immigrants by employers. My point is that part of any comprehensive immigration reform will need to include some means of fixing this broken part of our system.

Nobody is closing any doors. The US accepts 1.3 million legal immigrants each year.
You gave me a bad link. I found what you meant though, and it does absolutely nothing to undermine the point in the Reason article.
For tens of millions of people, it is literally impossible to immigrate to the US. If you are not particularly skilled in an area where the US has need, and you're from many countries in Latin America, you can wait forever for a temporary work visa and never get it.

And that gives them the right to blatantly disreguard our laws? I think not. I understand they want to come here, but do so legally or don't do it at all. Coming here illegally shows you have no respect for our country and it's laws.
