If I could choose where my tax $$ were spent, it wouldn't be on public union trolls, it would be spent on people who don't have their heads firmly planted in their colons and have actually DONE SOMETHING to deserve tax payer monies.
What does a military person do to deserve tax payer money?
They apply for and get a job that they choose. Period.
They're not protecting anything in the US except for corporate interests and "he tried to kill my daddy."
I've seen people get 20% disability for acne. Yes, acne.
Are there people hurt and deserve disability, absolutely.
All, hardly.
How about we stop having wars, that would be a lot cheaper.
As a combat veteran, I can say that we don't ask for very much.
When you look at how Vets are treated in places like England, I feel thankful. I'm also encouraged by the bulk of the responses here.
I think the present system is pretty adequate. They've done wonderful things for guys that lost legs and so on. Could there be room for improvement?...of course, there always can in almost anything.

So what does a person who applies for a job in a mill and gets disabled on the job do to deserve taxpayer money?
They'll get SSI Disability checks.
I'm not here saying they don't deserve it however....unlike you.
I retired from the Navy in 2001. At that time I was told that I should expect to get a 30% disability rating from the VA, however any disability money that the VA gave me would be subtracted from my pension. So that my gross monthly income would remain the same.
After a series of medical appointments at the VA [that I was billed for], the VA decided that each of my five disabilities would receive ratings of 0%. They agreed that each was service-connected but that none of them disabled me from working a career. As the years go by and each gets worse, when they begin to get bad enough that they stop me from being able to work, then my rating could be reassessed.
As a retiree, on pension, I am already covered by Tricare. So I do get medical care that is far superior to what Active Duty personnel have. I know a lot of disabled vets [who are not retirees] and I must say that my medical care is far superior to theirs; they go to the Va, whereas I go to any civilian hospital that I want to go to.
I see no purpose in fighting with the VA.
I know that it used to be that if you had a service connected disability that was under 30% (i think...not sure), then they just paid it out for cash. My brother gets $300 a month for his shoulder, and i don't quite understand how that works.
In any case, the system works pretty well the way it is now. I know people don't want to believe it, but a lot of vets know how to game the system for more cash with fake service related disabilities that they shouldn't be getting paid for. I've met more than a few people who have asked me if i'm getting any money (i'm not), and that if not, they could show me how to squeeze some money out of the system by working my medical records some way or another.
