because we need a NATIONAL STANDARD...it doesnt have to be a national id (although it would be cheaper to do it at a national level then to have the states do it), but a national STANDARD needs to be enforced...if each state is different and has their own databases that dont MATCH up with each other, that adds to the costs....a national standard, and a national id would be best and cheapest
So instead of a national standard? We are asking for the worse option, which is a national ID? So how is that the smart way of doing things? So Congress hasn't figured it out or the President or his advisors that the better way is through a national standard?? Its so great we elect such great leaders or is there a more hidden and nefarious reason to go with national ID? If national standard is so great, then do it... it requires very little overhead and tweaking... national ID requires incredibly high overhead and doesn't work well at all that is unless there is a more hidden purpose...
I can't see a National ID being a workable/viable program until we can ensure the compliance of sancturary states - not to mention enforcement of our current immigration laws by the Federal Government. What purpose will a National ID serve more favorably than current state drivers license or US government issued passports already do?

Because then the Fed owns the database that all the info is on.
Information is power.

Don't they already? Any Federal Agent can check DMV records - heck - any local cop can. The US passport data is also obtainable by any governement agent. They already own the data. What precisely is a new widget (a National id number) going to give them that they can't source now?

It's easier if it's all in one place and owned by one agency.
DHS is probably the agency that would oversee it.
Multi state, multi agency databases are all set up differently and have different policies and procedures in place for access.
The FBI database for criminals is different. There is already something national in place for criminals. But there is nothing national for Joe Main Street.
Quick access to your own data..think how safe we'll be since they could find terrorists that much quicker.
already....so what are you worried about if we actauall had a national (your country that your should be PROUD of) id.........
Individual access to information is in no way the same thing as mandating yet another federal database.
Being proud of the country has nothing whatsoever to do with blindly trusting government to never abuse it's power.
