Good news as far as it goes. It puts the Arab League on the side of the rebels and gives legitimacy to any NATO/UN/US action. Hopefully though the League can manage this largely on their own - but will likely need western surveillance capabilities & support.
Amr Moussa, the secretary-general of the Arab League said "The Arab League has officially requested the UN Security Council to impose a no-fly zone against any military action against the Libyan people,"
Moussa acknowledged that he did not know "how nor who [would] impose this zone, that remains to be seen". "The Arab League can also play a role, that is what I will recommend," he said. The bloc also stressed that it had rejected any "foreign military" intervention in Libya, and Moussa said the no-fly zone must be lifted once the crisis has ended.

Now, it seems that the Arab League has opened the door to that no fly zone but they also said they reject any foreign military intervention so I guess they will have to enforce the zone as best as they can. Some of them do have the planes to do it with, don't they?
I guess they better warm up whatever's left of those MiG's and Mirages and get to work.
Ah I agree with the sentiment however...
Saudi Arabia has eight squadrons of F-15s, one squadron of Euro-fighters and the Sentrys to guide them. Egypt brings F-16's to the dance as does Bahrain, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.
It's pretty clear to me that they have the tools. The will, well that's whole other issue.
I heard a commentator on TV make the point that a no-fly zone over Libya may not do much. Gaddafi is using a lot of low flying helicopters to suppress the rebels, which fighter jets would probably have a hard time intercepting.

Robert Gates is hesitant and US is already overstretched. EU is hesitant and will simply discuss things - typical of them -they are not doers. Arab League will actually do nothing. I think the world has left the Libyans to be salughtered - Gadafi is becoming bolder by the day as he sees no one blocking him. Unfortunate, but most countries dont seem to have the will or the money to do much other than issue statements.
Muslim nations in that region routinely drum the "US/Jewish" oppressor card [which is in itself a racist claim towards Jews], and now they want the US to fix their problem ? They have the Airpower themselves to get it done...So they should do it themselves. Muslims fixing Muslim problems would be a great thing to see.
Also the US is bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan. We dont need to risk a 3rd area to get bogged down in. And if we did get bogged down in Libya, that would give terrorist groups ammo in which they could claim the US is trying to "take over" another Muslim country.
Thats not even taking into account that most of our Arab "allies" are not even Democracies themselves. Which points to the hypocrisy amongst the US leadership. We are supposed to jump for joy that Libya's rebels "might" be Democratic and send in the US airforce to help them on that supposed notion...but there is a far greater chance that the "rebels" are Islamic Fundies.
And Im sure our other Dictator-Arab "allies" are taking note of how two-faced the US is. Friend one day, enemy the next. Saudis etc, take note.
For such a male dominated culture they eally need grow a set of testes and get after it.
Do your own heavy lifting, Arabs.
