Canada has a perception among many in the U.S. as being a socialist country. However, Canada actually has a freer economy than the United States, and it is rated as one of the freest economies in the world:

Alberta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Economy of Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Economic Freedom of the World - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yet, they still manage to provide universal healthcare and unlimited unemployment to their citizens, and have a balanced national budget. Why is that? Why do you think that is?

My opinion is that it's all based on one thing: Canada has strict limits on campaign contributions. Lobbying is almost nonexistent. Their politicians are not bought and paid for like ours here in the States.

That’s interesting,,, how Canada didn’t fall victim like the U.S. on these issues. Must be because the American Tea Party movement can’t figure out just “what” is the problem here in the states. Seems they support corporations and corporate welfare along with the political party on the right; to hell with the people but more power to the corporations.

So since you then hate capitalism... you must also hate Canada? Or do you love it because of their socialistic tendencies? So the truth comes out... Everyone's told you COUNTLESS times... corporatism is different from capitalism... countless times... the liberals just like the Republicans LOVE the lobbyists...

Really? You really do learn something new everyday. If it is true that they don't fall prey to the power of behemoth corporations then good on them. America needs to follow suit. Capitalism, true capitalism, can only survive when it is in fact free. Not when the rules of the game are rigged by cronies and gangster-esque corporations.

Canada is also blessed with energy resources, much in demand, and is not afraid to exploit them. Oh wait, isn't that due to free market?

Canada has a much stronger banking system than the US, too.

I doubt the conclusion that more freedom equals more capitalism is correct. Anyway, Canada has a different culture and mentality, and of course it has far fewer people to take care of, they still need immigrants and can pick the best. Plus, it is farther away from sources of illegal immigration. No historical social problems like in the US...

The U.S. is Canada's largest foreign investor and the most popular destination for Canadian foreign investments; at the end of 2007, the stock of U.S. direct investment in Canada was estimated at $293 billion, while Canadian direct investment (stock) in the United States was valued at $213 billion. U.S. FDI accounts for 59.5% of total foreign direct investment in Canada while Canadian FDI in the U.S. accounts for 10% (5th largest foreign investor).

US investments are primarily directed at Canada's mining and smelting industries, petroleum, chemicals, the manufacture of machinery and transportation equipment, and finance, while Canadian investment in the United States is concentrated in manufacturing, wholesale trade, real estate, petroleum, finance, and insurance and other services

we both invest in each other and are pretty much the exact same culture and both of us are long time allies and are good neighbors
