The Libyan rebels are very well armed,I do believe with tanks and armored vehicles and heavy weapons.

When it appeared the rebels would lose,suddenly an intervention was necessary.

Well a lot are deserters and they took arms from the various military installations under their control.

Point is, this isn't to stop the killing of unarmed civilians anymore,it is to provide air support for one side against the other.
