OVER his second beer at The Shanty in Tucson, a pub popular among Democrats, Paul Eckerstrom gets to the point. “We don’t like Phoenix,” he says of the state capital in Maricopa County to the north, home to more than half of Arizona’s population. So Mr Eckerstrom, a lawyer and former chairman of the Pima County Democratic Party, has launched the long legal process to secede and form a new state, tentatively called Baja Arizona.
This idea of Baja Arizona is not new. Some trace it back to the Gadsden Purchase of 1854, when America bought from Mexico a strip of land south of the Gila river that was not included in the earlier cession after the Mexican-American war. More recently, the Midwestern snowbirds and others who flooded into Arizona mainly settled in Maricopa, making it politically dominant and distinct.

Why stop there? Why not go all the way and declare that area now part of Mexico. What he's really saying is he wants to ignore our nation's immigration laws. Wonder what was his oath of office?

Nothing to ponder or see here. Talk is cheap, especially if that talk has been going on since the Gadsden Purchase.

It's been done before, West Virginia for example, I think Baja Arizona would be great but we need to make Bisbee the Capitol. It would keep Frau Blucher, JT Ready and the rest of the Arizona National Socialist Movement out

Do you live in the area? Phoenix and Tucson are very different and it appears that Tucson wants representation (a say) in matters of the state. The state is named Arizona, not Phoenix.

I not only read the article, I also read the responses. From what was written, it seemed more about sour grapes liberals who favor an open border rather than our nation's laws. They're in the minority in the state and they're made as heck.

Most Democrats in office don't believe in or abide by the Constitution.

Look at McDermott, he's sick of looking at the Constitution. That pesky thing.

Nancy Pelosi. Do I really have to say it?

Janet Napolitano. "Border security in Arizona is better than it's ever been".

But, does that mean that border security is good? No

Secession doesn't make any sense. Maybe to the Hollywood types. That crowd is just an extension of L.A.

Secession makes more sense for other parts of the country. And more legitimately.

Just another scream from the far left that always wants a leftist utopia but never extends a helping hand.

I like the idea.

Why the racist stereotype? Or are you implying that she is an immigration friendly, liberal like most Germans?
