How much of rural America would survive without welfare. There are states where almost half the people are on food stamps

But what if, as many conservatives desire, we eliminated or at least drastically reduced welfare programs and public housing, would our ghettos turn into third world slums? I live in Michigan.

If you've ever been to Detroit, the ghetto is the same thing as a slum.

I suppose that you're trying to say that a slum is worse. I get it.

Look, spending has to be cut, but not on the truly needy. There are people in Detroit living in refrigerator boxes right now.

I know that's your question, but the answer is not what can we give to the poor as much as it is what can we do to improve opportunity.

Better economy, less poverty.

Buy a plane ticket, and fly to Detroit, three blocks away from the skyline, the towers and the casinos, you will see what I mean.

it is when they steal my stuff and send the crime rate thru the roof

what makes you think they will only move out when and if they're capable of doing so on their own merit?

They should be required to do work like clean roads, paint walls and so forth.

Soon there will be only the poor and elected officials. They will destroy the rich and spread class warfare to pander to the poor.

There comes a point when it's no longer a matter of what you wish. The money is gone and the credit card is maxed out. It really is that simple.

Then there should be a free market in housing. In a free market, poor people would be able to buy homes and they would make a better area.

Heck, the central business district in Detroit is about three blocks by three blocks. It is truly lame and an epic fail as CBDs go.
