What's a good percentage? Would you care to throw out a number of should we just rely on repetitive guesstimates from the ill-informed?

This link shows you what Detroit looks like today.

I know that the media reports that conditions are bad here, but a picture says a thousand words.

Most folks have a place to sleep, I think, but these ghetto scenes are the streets that people walk through every day. It's not a ghetto scene, it's the ghetto for REAL. Can you imagine your outlook on life when your environment is this? It goes on for 50 miles in every direction. Detroit is huge. What if you were 5 years old, 10 years old, 15 years old. How would this environment effect your thought?

Right here in Michigan.

Yes and Detroit has been under Democratic leadership for the past few decades or so. The majority of Detroit is black and the majority of blacks are Democratic.

That’s sad this website would have you think all of the city looks like this. The properties posted here are virtually all in the same abandoned community, which is a small distance from the Casino, the museum district, hockey town, the new Tiger stadium and theatre district, don’t be fooled or dismayed by these pictures. As a matter of fact there is a Wayne County Tax sale going on September 17, 2010 that could get you properties with equity in them fill free to visit our website that doesn’t spend an entire site on the destruction. Our site is http://www.jcidetroitrealtors.com. Look to here from you. Oh and did I mention there is a electric train being built in the city to run the entire lenght of the city. The Detroit Piston’s has a new owner who is considering building a new stadium in the downtown area for the ball players. A new bridge going up from one country to another in an area that would be very promising for an investor. Quicken Loans head quarters has moved downtown. A mall going up on 8 mile and Woodward. Don’t be fooled sir this is not a reflection of what’s to happen. Be a part of the new city. Visit me on my website my name is Tracy!

I dont' think that the country would turn 3rd world. We have running water and electricity. We have public schools that allow anyone to get at lease a basic education, people can build on that and get to a better position in life. So no, we are too advanced to be thrid world.

That said, I do believe that all social services programs should have time limits on them. I work in the public housing sector and it is ridiculous how many people think it is their right to have subsidized housing and how many people sue housing authorities even though they only pay $100 to live in an area with market rate rents of $1200 plus for stupid reasons costing tax payers even more money. The whole system is ridiculous. I can understand people down on their luck and trying to get to a better position in life with the help of foodstamps, WIC, welfare, or daycare assistance but there has to be a limit. Some people will continue to take and take forever.

To even think that a third world type of situation in the USA (outside of Native American reservations, who also receive welfare basically) could exist on a wide scale is just ridiculous. I also agree with another poster though that it would be more likely to occur in rural areas versus urban areas.

Oh and wanted to add, I am from the midwest, near Detroit and my aunt lives in a so-called ghetto on the West side of Detroit near 8 mile and she owns a very nice 4 bedroom brick home, with a nicely manicured lawn, she raised 2 sons (is still raising 1) who are both honor students with her husband. They both have full time jobs and earn a middle class income. The whole city of Detroit is not a slum filled with poor "woe-is-me-black-people-on-welfare." It depends on where you live and this can be said about all cities and urban/suburban areas around the country.

Hey, I agree.

I live a long way away from Detroit. And have always voted Republican.

But, the unions had control of the Detroit area and the I-75 corridor for half a century. I have relatives in Detroit, and when the union says jump they say how high? When the union gives you the day off from work with pay, $30 an hour in the auto factories, you vote the way they tell you to. It even gets Governors elected. And it's not just Blacks. Whites outnumber Blacks in the entire Detroit metro area. Whites have also voted for Democrats under the influence of their union bosses.

That is the history in Detroit - and also it's demise.

We will never know until that happens, will we? The difference between you and I is that I have faith in the American people to improve their situation based on their own hard work and ability.

My household income has tripled over the past 5 years. Neither my husband nor myself has a college degree, but we worked hard to improve ourselves.

Your attitude reminds me of my parents. They never wanted my sister to move out, because they were convinced she would never be able to support herself. When they both passed away, she bought a condo, got a good full time job and now is doing just fine. She just needed to be shoved out of the nest. That's what some (not all, of course) of these welfare recipients need.

and your problem is: you see it as the poor minors. We all feel sorry for the kids, but if welfare was cut or used properly those "poor kids" moms and maybe dads would get off their butts and get a job. The only reason there are so many programs for kids is mommy having too many and not wanting to work or finding out it is better to collect checks and food stamps than to work. My daughter was telling me the other day about a gal she works with at a major airport. Our daughter needed this gal to trade shifts or pick up her hours one Sat. Their pay is $22 an hour. The women is a part timers and told my daughter she would be glad to help as long as it wasn't the wrong week, cause if she worked more than 20 hours that week she would get her food stamps and some other government assistance she gets. What is wrong with this picture, why isn't she working 40 hours a week?
