The worst welfare is the 750 billion given to banks......not welfare. Its not even comparable.....hate poor welfare all you want but rich welfare is worse.
The poor control and own NOTHING and make no decisions that control this country.
so its worse to give 750 billion ONETIME dolaars that were PAID BACK..then to give over 500 billion ANNUALLY that never gets paid back
we spend a half a trillion on welfare everyyear...to no avail
There is an interesting thread right now in the General U.S. forum that is comparing U.S. ghettos to third world ghettos, with the general consensus that third world ghettos make U.S. ghettos look like the middle class. But what if, as many conservatives desire, we eliminated or at least drastically reduced welfare programs and public housing, would our ghettos turn into third world slums? Would you be willing to live in a country like that for the sake of reducing spending?
You can't compare the two. Most third world countries are that way because there is NO OPPORTUNITY. Nothing to export, corruption, lack of natural resources and specialties, etc. So there is simply no money.
We have less corruption, specialties, plenty of businesses, etc. Maybe we're in a bit of a down turn now but these options have been there for people. They choose not to because its easier. They choose drugs and crime because its also easier.
I agree, get rid of it or slim down to those that need it. When you enable people to live this lifestyle, they will take advantage of it. You don't have to be smart to figure this out.
We have no ghettos or slums in Europe. It's because of the welfare state. You can walk around any part of the city at any time of day or night in safety. It's nice, you should try it some time in the US.
boy do you live in a dream world. If you think having a small housse would stop people from have too many kids, explain why so many, in small apartments have large families? As for cheap land, who is going to buy this cheap land? If the government expected to buy it so everyone can own a home. What makes you think people have a right to own a home? Home ownership is earned in is a privilege and not a right.

Really. There are entire families living in single wide trailers and government subsidized housing is usually tight small dwellings for a family. You are right.

The private sector really CAN solve issues like this.
What I have in mind - what I would do if I had the money - is a small subdivision with small lots and small houses...and DEED RESTRICTIONS limiting occupancy to two persons.
Right there you effectively eliminate the problem of large families or too many kids in small houses.
Deed restrictions can be enforced, and other residents in the subdivision will surely act to protect themselves.
Who is going to buy this land? I would if I had the money. Who's going to buy the individual lots or houses? There are plenty of low-wage workers who would love the opportunity to own a small house. If I had a choice between paying $500 to rent a room in a house, and owning a tiny house, I'll take the house, thank you.
Owning a small house means no more landlord hassles, no more rent increases, no more involuntary moving (because you can't afford the rent increase), stable housing costs (very important on a low income), and the other benefits of homeownership
Most Native American reservations in the U.S are not that far off from resembling a Brazilian favela, and yet these reservations are still run by the government.
Without a doubt our ghettos would turn into 3rd world slums just like without Federal subsidies & transfer payments many rural places (Appalachia & the Imperial Valley come to mind) would return to the poverty stricken hell holes they used to be.
