yikes! i am all alone in thinking this could be a bad idea.
from the description just released, i am not sure it will help all that much:
“bin Laden’s corpse was badly disfigured, making it all the more difficult to decide whether to release images, particularly of his face,†said Brennan.
Bin Laden was reportedly shot twice in the head, over the left eye. The rounds blew off part of his head and disfigured his face. But according to government officials, they were able to identify him by what was left of his features.
They could just black that part out. I saw an autopsy of a man who had shot himself with a shotgun through his mouth, and it does indeed disfigure the face and really the entire head (although the bullet used here would not have left as much damage as a shotgun, I imagine). But if they hadn't gotten rid of the body yet (stupid move!) they would have been able to sew his face/head back together enough that he could be recognized, and then just black out that top part above his eye so people don't have to see the actual wounds.
No. In today's internet age those photos of Bin Laden can be easily mis-used in a variety of ways. I mean, even some board members may post those photos in their signatures for fun.
it is interesting that this issue definitely crosses your typical party lines.
i don't think you can fault anyone for their position on this issue. i guess the issues are
1) not backing down to terrorists
2) wanting proof
3) letting terrorists know they can't get away with anything
4) justice for anybody who was killed or injured at 9-11, or by any terrorist attack.
on the other side, i think the issues are
1)protecting soldiers from any unnecessary increased aggression
2) thinking it might not be appropriate for everyone to see, especially kids
3) thinking the violence should end now
i wonder if the split would be the same on pulling out of these wars, or if that is an entirely different issue.
i also heard that they cleaned OBL up before the funeral and that they do have pictures after that was done, before putting him in the water. my friend kindly pointed out that i was an idiot if i didn't think that just killing him and announcing that he was defenseless at the time wouldn't inflame nuts texactly the same as if they showed a picture.
Osama's picture should be published; Halloween is still months away, but people will need time to make realistic looking masks. The sooner they can start, the better.
I actually meant to click "yes", but accidentally clicked "no".
So my vote is YES.
