Capitol Report: Open meetings law violation halts collective bargaining law

Quote:
Union supporters were handed a victory - although possibly temporary - Thursday morning when a Dane County judge struck down a controversial bill that stripped most collective bargaining rights from public employees.

Dane County Circuit Court Judge MaryAnn Sumi issued a permanent injunction against the bill on the grounds lawmakers violated the state's open meetings law by failing to give proper 24-hour notice before holding a special committee meeting March 9.

The meeting began at 6 p.m. March 9. Public notice was given around 4:20 p.m. that same day.

Four of the five committee members present proceeded to approve the bill that curtailed collective bargaining. The vote paved the way for the Senate to approve it later that night and Gov. Scott Walker to sign it into law two days later.

Union judge, they met under special orders making the way they met legal under the law.

Overturned and reinstated next step up.
