question: if we gave inmates 1 meal a day instead of 3, would that be a 66 percent savings?

aren't states always looking for ways to save?

Would medical costs go up? Would it make it a more dangerous situation for guards? Would all assaults (inmate and staff) go up? Would lawsuits happen?

I do not see the savings you speak of...It would be more expensive in the end.

Especially defending all of the legal challenges; underfeeding people might be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

Got to agree.People Locked up get Bored, look for stuff to cause trouble. The only way to still have control and save is to feed them just enough to keep them from starving and at a weakened state.Seen plenty of this in POW Camps in late '60's.

Well unless you're talking about cutting their calories in 1/3, why would the meal cost go down by 1/3. If that's what you were, I think a few judges would stop in and keep you from killing inmates from starvation.

Perhaps if you were so worried about this, you could have piped up before the US put 1% of the population in jail.

Yes, states are looking for ways to save. I suspect however, states would spend more defending themselves from the lawsuits resulting from this than they would ever save.

No, starvation is eating less than your body requires. In fat people, they call it dieting, but it's still forcing the body to find its calories elsewhere, from its own fat stores and muscle protein. It's just slower starvation to eat a single meal a day.

I see further evidence of America having turned over to the dark side. Torture? No problem. Starve prison inmates to save cash? Hmm, let's look into it.

Is this thread about ways to save money or ways to be cruel to people?

Empty the prisons of nonviolent offenders. That would save cash in the billions. But to resort to hurting people in order to save cash? My God, this reads like the meeting minutes from a Big Pharma or health insurance boardroom.
