American society is shallow. Money (and materialism) is highly valued, even worshipped. America is the nation that worships the Golden Calf.
Who are Americans without their materialism?
I'm sure some are like that, just like they are in every country and society.
But to make such a negative generalization is wrong and probably reflects your jealousy.
I know a lot of people, and very few worship the golden calf. Most of us just enjoy life.
He was quoting a book. You know those things they have in libraries, made out of paper, now available electronically. Liberal elites read them from time to time.
80 years of Keynesian economic policies has left our nation 14 trillion dollars in debt. It is time to return to the classical liberal philosophies of Jefferson, Smith, Mill, Mises, Hayek and Friedman.
Liberal schmiberal. Aside from Jefferson (I assume you are talking about Thomas Jefferson), I never heard of any of these people. Conversely, I wonder if you have ever heard of Rockefeller, Ford (as in Henry), Getty (as in J. Paul), Carnegie (as in Andrew - as in libraries), and a host of WEALTHY entrepreneurs who made this country strong.
Nobel prizes and all that are very nice, but they do not feed people. Theory and postulation is what is *wrong* with this country. Rolling up your sleeves and CREATING work and opportunities is what matters, not sitting around talking about it (or in most liberals' cases, whining about it.)
And to create things. You need money.

You really should read Mises, Hayek and Friedman. Here is a good place to start;

You make good points.
I agree that such people are in most developed nations. I live many years in Germany and saw that. They are the Bourgeoisie, an international mentality. America, however, is the world's staunch fortress of the Bourgeoisie.
I'm not jealous, envious, or whatever.
I'm sure there are enough Americans that would rather read a book than watch American Idol or rent an Italian movie instead of going to see the latest Hollywood offering.
Who will admit to worshipping the Golden Calf? No one. I think the only ones insulted by my posts are those who see themselves in my descriptions.

Obviously, you have never had a single economics class. The people you speak of made this country strong because they were not near as hindered by government policies as capitalists today.
We are in this together and this corporate fantasy of socialism for the top one percent and "free market" for the rest of us is on it's way out.
Would be nice. I'm not hopeful, but maybe someday, after this planet is in complete disarray, after many have died, after much has crumbled, will people wake up.
