In October, the city proposed a two-year experiment to see if the prohibition would reduce obesity among people who buy their groceries with food stamps. But in a letter Friday, an administrator of the food stamp program in Washington said the city’s proposed experiment would have been “too large and complex” to implement and evaluate.
Federal Officials Reject City's Plan to Ban Food Stamps for Soda - NYTimes.com

What we're talking about here is a simply changing the UPC code system to reject carbonated beverages.

Too large and too complex.

And Obamacare is not too large and too complex?

Quote:
Tom Vilsack, the secretary of agriculture, said in a statement that the United States Department of Agriculture “has a longstanding tradition of supporting and promoting incentive-based solutions that are better suited for the working families, elderly and other low-income individuals” who rely on food stamps. “We are confident that we can solve the problem of obesity and promote good nutrition and health for all Americans and stand ready to work with New York City to achieve these goals.”
I guess that's only if the federal government sets up a gigantic taxpayer funded bureaucracy to fund it.

Maybe Frau Obama von Kenya an der Ulm can set up the Reichsministerium für ungesunde Getränke to along with her Reichsministerium für Ernährung in Schulen.

I don't see a problem in re-evaluating the Food Stamp program. It would be much better to re-evaluate the types of items (not the brand) eligible rather than eliminate them altogether.

The lame duck POTUS needs all the votes he can get even if the carbonated beverages have no nutritional value. His actions smack of desperation.

Before you ask, no........food stamps should not pay for bottled water.

Here's my problem with the Federal Governments take:

Tom Vilsack, the secretary of agriculture, said in a statement that the United States Department of Agriculture “has a longstanding tradition of supporting and promoting incentive-based solutions that are better suited for the working families, elderly and other low-income individuals” who rely on food stamps. “We are confident that we can solve the problem of obesity and promote good nutrition and health for all Americans and stand ready to work with New York City to achieve these goals.”

So the city developed an initiative to promote a healthier city. The Feds reject it, then give a lame statement about being confident they can solve the problem of obesity...soooo....where is their plan???

I don't see a plan outlined anywhere.

Because the obvious is not a good solution for the FedGov
They will need about 2 years and lots of money to "study" the situation and come up with a complex, heavy labor procedure that will not solve the problem.

Besides..the corn industry and the soda manufacturers would not like that food stamps couldn't continue to provide revenue to them.

After actually reading the links that you posted, my guess is that it is just not a battle the administration wants to tackle right now, because of opposition to similar proposals that were not successful in the past.

UPC codes are the least of it.

If you outlawed food stamps paying for grape soda, there'd be a riot that would make the Arab spring uprising look like a love fest
