I expect it is making a statement "look how far we have come". From battles to fight segregation in the 1960s to being President of the United States.
Still, it is a constant reminder of the division that once existed, and for the most part, still exists in this country today. Somehow, it is like sleeping with a burr in your bed, no matter how hard you try to ignore it, you can't.
Perhaps Mr. Obama likes Rockwell, I don't know. But there are better choices, IMHO.
He also grew up in a culture totally different. He did not return to the US until college - right?
Obama has no exposure (both in himself and his lineage) to the struggles that took place here.
And - are you speaking of the painting from the OP?
wrong....obama attended kindergarten at Noelani Elementary school on Oahu. later he went to Punahou also on oahu. as we say in hawaii...

Or perhaps it shows the incredible courage of a young American Child to overcome all odds and not be consumed by hate.

No, there aren't "better choices" in art work for this president to pick from. Each president who moves into the White House borrows a certain number of pieces from museums all over the country. The art is suppose to represent their tastes and preferences and something they want to live with. The borrowed art, therefore, doesn't have to please anyone but the current occupants of the White House and whatever they pick IS the better choice for them. All the pieces the Obama's choose---I think seven in all---have been deemed by some right wing group as too ethic or too something or other. Too bad. Tough turkeys. When the next guy/gal moves in, they can hang up Cheerio box tops, if they want, or Andy Warhhol and whatever they pick is the better/best choice for THEM.

Born in 1961, and he returned to live with his grandparents in Hawaii in 1971. That took a whole 5 seconds with Google.
I know it's very important to find a politically acceptable way to encode "he's different", but seriously?
