BERLIN, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- A German comedian who drew criticism for a billboard featuring him in blackface makeup as President Barack Obama said no racism was intended.

Martin Sonneborn, whose billboard was part of the campaign for his satirical political party, Die Partie, ahead of Sunday's state elections in Berlin, said he was unaware of the history of racist blackface theater in the United States when he donned the makeup to pose as President Barack Obama for the billboard, The Local reported Friday.

Not judging either way, but blackface isn't taboo in Europe like it is here. I learned about this Dutch tradition last Christmas about "Black Peter" It's kind of interesting.

I can't too outraged at his lack of reasoning and claim of ignorance, hell, conservatives in this country claim to be ignorant of the racial connotations of calling black people monkeys and apes in this country.

The knee-jerk reaction of racism is expected but I would need to see a photo before judging. Putting make-up on a white person to make them look black isn't necessarily racist "black face".

Probably because one was created in Jim Crow and used to mock a people while white face is more modern. What gets me about the black face thing is its usually in ministrel fashion- black shoe polished make up with unrealistic red, pink or off white bubble lips . This is not what the most African Americans look like. Many of us are crayola brown or lighter with noses or lips not much different from the average white person. Obama's black face does not look like him. It would have been less offensive if German dude just spray tan his skin close to Obama's actual complexion rather than something from the 1940s.

Here is an example of blackface that is actually convincing and less offensive. Some people thought this was a real black actor

Angelina Jolie playing a black or mixed woman. All they did to her was curl up her hair a bit and gave her a tan to appear more ''ethnic''
