Since we are not going to fix America's education system nor uncover the roots of it's failure here in this thread we might as well talk about another subject that's just as futile...
Can you make a swiss cheese omelet at the North Pole without any implement to cook the eggs on...
-or-
How do you clean up a dogs diarrhea with only your bare hands on a pristine beach in Samoa.
Sad thing is my horrible typing skills don't help. I'm pretty good with all the ones listed..... There I only had to correct 7 things.....( I had typed 6 but had to change it)
Anyone up for discussing the migratory path of Canadian geese during the fall months when the Earth tilts 10 degrees off it's axis and there is a meteor shower over Brazil?

Basically, what you are saying is it is unimportant for people to take personal responsibility to improve their English skills? You have sent the message that it is unimportant to improve upon skills because our schools are imperfect, parents are imperfect, and people are imperfect.
Taking personal responsibility to improve oneself is always a personal choice. People either see the value in it, or they do not. I guess you do not. For me, I know I make mistakes. I also know that my grammar is imperfect, but when I submit a resume, written professional report or write a grant that I want the grammar to be correct. It may be the difference in getting hired or the grant funded.

I am saying the OP is:
Mistakes that make you look dumb
-not-
America fails in teaching English grammar
-or-
Are Americans lazy for not wanting to better their English grammar?
I am saying this thread was hijacked, pure and simple...
Read between the lines all you want, this thread became a waste of bandwidth and an elitist pedestal starting at post #4...
Now if you or anyone else can tell me that between all the know-it-all's and elitists here on C-D you or anyone else can only come up with nothing more <then><than> criticize other people's English grammar or spelling mistakes in response to the OP, it truly shows how pathetic we as Americans have become...
So, with that said lets discuss the impact that modern neo-impressionistic art had on the design of modern skyscrapers in Dubai...
These spellings really don't make much sense, so you just have to remember them. "Loose" is the opposite of tight, and rhymes with goose. "Lose" is the opposite of win, and rhymes with booze. (To show how unpredictable English is, compare another pair of words, "choose" and "chose," which are spelled the same except the initial sound, but pronounced differently. No wonder so many people get it wrong!)
Loose = it's not tight, it's loosey goosey
Lose= "don't lose the hose for the rose" is a way to remember the same spelling but a different pronunciation
I never thought I could lose so much weight; now my pants are all loose!

This one really bugs me for some reason, along with "hypocracy" instead of hypocrisy.
Personally, as an air traffic controller, the whole left-right confusion I suffer from is much more detrimental to how I'm perceived by my peers than any misuse of the word "there".
Is it politically correct to pretend not to notice how all of America is dumbing down? It seems that even those who are supposedly "smart" aren't really so smart. Or perhaps they just don't care.
For those that would like to at least seem like they know what they are writing about here's an article from Slate Magazine that lists the most common mistakes made even by those who should know better. They include some of your favorites like "your" and "you're".
Maybe someone has already pointed this out to you, but "For those that would..." in your post should be "For those who would..."
The use of the word 'that' is for anything non-human.
