I don't find it strange since many celebrities are marketing to a global and/or youthful fan base that finds a certain level of anti-Americanism appealing or, at least, mildly fashionable. It's very good for sales. Whether it's hypocritical is a different issue.

I would distinguish that, however, from celebrities who believe they are pro-American, but may have a different conception of what that means than some of their fellow citizens.
Thank you for the location, JEB77. I like to find places in DC on the Google map.

Celebrities can be so disappointing and un-original these days. <sigh>

I think the presumption that many of you are making about most of the protesters and Celebrities being "Anti-American" reveals your own bias. Since when is a protest against the greedy investment banking weasels who drove our economy into the ground and then paid themselves millions in bonuses with your tax dollars (and somehow avoided jail-time) anti-American and anti-capitalist? I support these people, and a new Time Magazine poll reveals that a solid majority of America (54%) support them as well----I think the Tea Party had 27% in the same poll. Heck, no one else is out there speaking out against these crooks. Wall Street owns most of Republican Party and half of the Democrats as well. I will go out on a limb and call the "Occupy" people "patriots". Are there some Anarchist and Socialists in their ranks? Sure, but I seem to recall some racists and far-Right loons at the Tea Party events as well. The fringe will always latch on to any public protest. It gives them media exposure.

Smithy77--Regarding Wall Street: I agree with you. Unfortunately, the greed extended beyond those leading the investment/banking industry. Many of our elected representatives in Congress have been doing a fine job of ignoring serious problems (while looking out for their own interests). Why do so many of them become much richer after they are elected?

It seems like you have misunderstood my point about celebrities. But I suppose some celebrities might be in a bind now because their investments, real estate, and/or movie projects won't be earning them much money in the near future, and they have a right to protest if they wish. They should know that they don't automatically have credibility in understanding government/economic issues, even if they are somewhat famous.

Big labor, George Soros and moveon.org are funding it. This whole thing is primarily made up of a bunch of bored, spoiled, lazy white college students and droupouts who never learned that they should be responsible for their own lives, and that the rest of the world doesn't owe them a living. They're being used by those I mentioned above and are too stupid to realize it. For some reason most of them still love Obama even though his administration and the federal government are largely responsible for the troubles on Wall Street against which they ostensibly are protesting. They should all go home, take a shower, and reacquaint themselves with their parents' couches.

This thread was originally intended to discuss interactions of Northern Virginian residents with the "Occupy DC" protests at Freedom Plaza and elsewhere. Since the focus became more about general political concerns than NOVA-specific experiences, the thread has been moved here.

Last I heard, they had about 52 protesters out and about. Why would DC residents be protesting - the area is one of a few THRIVING in this country.

There are people on the planet who can see beyond their own noses.

Hey, they'll take their money, but from everything I've read, they're not taking marching orders from anyone.
