We don't call ourselves "Euro-Americans", and neither should you call yourself "African-American". It calls your alegience into question. Would you go and live there, rather than here? My guess is that your answer would be, "No".

A couple of my favorite conservatives, and syndicated columnists, Thomas Sowell, and Walter E. Williams, do not call themselves "African-Americans".

And I don't think Herman Cain does either (and I'd vote for him in a heart beat). And no, I didn't vote for Obama, because he is a socialist and Marxist, and I knew it then.
The beautiful thing about being an AMERICAN, is that if you wanted to call yourself Euro-American, you would have that INDIVIDUAL RIGHT. Americans questioning other Americans allegiance to to their own country because they are exercising their INDIVIDUAL RIGHT to define themselves as they see fit is quite problematic. At the end of the day, American and African-American are one in the same.

At the local math competition each year I see about 1 black student out of 1500 when the area is 8-10% black.

I also went to college 20 years ago with a number of black and hispanics from Chicago and they all got grief for being too smart.

It's a little shamefull.

P.S. Sports etc. were pushed way beyond academics in my almost all-white town too. It's a US cultural phenomenon.

First of all the term "African American" was coined to define Americans who are black by the Census Bureau in the 1970's. Since most Americans of black descent can only point to a continent as their only link to any type of ancestry known to them.
For you to be critical of blacks for using that term is sheer hypocrisy since you have obviously pointed out where "your" ancestors hailed from and what specific nations to boot. You obviously enjoy your history as do I myself but what would you call yourself if you were enslaved and stripped of your history and ancestry?
Human beings are social creatures so belonging is a important aspect whether it be by race or nationality.

The majority of blacks don't have book smarts at the same level of other groups. That much is very apparent. But the dumb ones are also holding back those blacks who are truly intelligent, and that I would consider similar to fascism. Like when the Church killed scientists who's discoveries went against the established norms.

Here's my little theory on this. I think Black-Americans and Hispanics may feel alienated from academic and intellectual things. Why? Because they've grown up in societies(the U.S and abroad) where the dominate face of intellectuals are white. So they don't see themselves being a part of this as Black-Americans and Latinos. In America you grow up absorbing the idea that whites did everything, said everything and wrote everything important. As a Black-American you rarely see a Black face associated with science and invention but you see plenty of white ones.

Basically to reduce this alienation from intellectul persuits Black kids and Latino kids at an early age need to be exposed to people from their backgrounds who were scientist and inventors. Latino kids for example need to be exposed to the mathematical innovations of the Mayans and Aztecs Indians. If these things were to happen then both groups will grow up knowing that not just whites have been a part of inventions, science and higher mathematics.

How can a Hispanic/Mexican kid associate doing well in math as being white when the Mayans invented zero and were better at math than many Europeans at that time?

It's more like antarez suggested. Studying and working hard isn't COOL. Chillin' and acting like a badazz is. By the way there is also social pressure on teen girls not to be academic overachievers. It hurts the fragile male teen egos and the guys aren't interested in smart girls.

Let's face it, as a society we do not value education. Isn't the term "self-made man" a high compliment? Don't we even have people on this subforum speaking derisively of a college education, as if there is some kind or dishonor in entering a structured program to get a degree? Nawww, let's just read some books, go to the "University of the Internet" to get whatever info I need. Or how about the "you don't use most of what you learn in college anyway" line? Kids of all colors are getting the message that you do not need to work hard to get ahead. Just be COOL.
You got this exactly right--I have a house full of teenaged boys, and half their friends seem to live here too. If something's "gay," it's not homosexual--it's uncool. It's not a nice word to use.
