A friend of mine teaches in welfare to work program. She has many interesting stories to tell about the crazy people in the classes. Many of them have been on welfare their entire life after popping out one baby after another and now are being forced to start the process of preparing to enter the world of work.

IN MOST CASES these people did not pay attention in when they were in school and have very poor reading and writing skills. Most have problems with listening, attention, impulse control and working well with others. They are incredibly naive about expectations employers would have about things like showing up on time, working with bosses, difficult coworkers, dealing with boredom and time management. They show almost no knowledge or ability in the soft skills that will make or break them in the world of work.

Their problems are immense but there is little time to train them. So my question is: how much money should the government spend in an era of huge deficits to try to train these people on the "soft skills" they need to survive corporate America? Is this the taxpayers responsibility or should they learn these things on their own or expect the employer to train them?

Does your friend carry a taser gun?

Most of them are high school dropouts (assuming they even made it to high school) who are illiterate and will never amount to anything. They have probably been madated to attend these classes and when they end up with a big "FAIL" the government can say "we tried". Give them a test for reading, writing, math at a 9th grade level and if they can pass it then try to further educate/train them.

I don't mind my tax dollars going towards helping people who are capable of getting on their feet and who want to better themselves, considering my taxes go to less worthy or unjust causes.

I suspect their lack of educations comes from the educrats not recognizing a different learning style or some problem. Prisons are full of ADHD people. Many of them dyslectic.

Default Yes, it was the teachers fault they were on welfare!

Yes, that is what my friend thinks after teaching these adults in the welfare to work programs. (They are wonderful, bright and hard working and all of the fault in their failings have to do with the poor teaching from their past and an education system that did not understand them. It had absolutely nothing to do with poor parenting and lazyness on the part of the students.)

You're asking of government should fund it? What it boils down to is:

1) is it a problem of society
2) is it in society's interest to remedy the problem
3) is there no other way to remedy the problem

If the answers to all three are "yes" then the answer to whether government should fund it is also yes.

Despite the fact that many if not all of these people grew up in situations where living off the dole was a way of life, there have got to be some who want out and who honestly do not know how the other half lives. If what it takes is re-educating them as to how to function in a part of society that they have not been a part of, namely showing up for work consistently and putting in effort then it beats just handing them the money.

But do welfare to work programs actually work? Or are the people too far gone and we would be better off just letting them stay on welfare so they can get out of our hair.

Should government fund WELFARE TO WORK Programs?

Yes.

Hand them a broom and dustpan and have them clean up trash, dog crap, and cigarette butts.

Beats sitting in front of the boob tube all day long.

I prefer these people be rounded up, put on busses, and sent to work in the fields as agricultural workers. A few seasons of picking melons in the sun will change their attitude about work real fast.
