What good is science for in the work place? Does the breakroom fridge have settings for 0 degrees kelvin? Do I need to understand torque to get to work?
Science being optional is at the discretion of the parents. A good parent should have an idea of their child's potential at an early age.
I use science and physics I learned in high school every single day at my job. I guess you think flying an airplane doesn't need any physics knowledge though, right?
Written by someone who has no clue how the educational system in the US works.
Science optional?
Really. Science is my least favorite core subject, but how can anyone in their right mind make it OPTIONAL???
And History being optional?

Is this a serious question? I mean, really? This is the same argument that high school slackers use for not passing their classes.
You think knowledge is only useful as far as it helps you "pay the bills"? How about the fact that analyzing historical events encourages critical thinking skills, and that learning from peoples' past mistakes gives you wisdom so that you don't repeat those same mistakes.
With people like this in our country, no wonder we're so far behind the curve compared to other developed countries. Un-freakin' believable!

OMG
I can truthfully say that you are one of 2 people that is making my ignore list. you have no conception of how the education system works or what education even is.
1st through 7th:
-[mandatory] - Math, Reading, Writing
-[mandatory] - Physical Education
-[mandatory] - Computer Classes
-[optional] - history
-[optional] - science
-[optional] - arts
8th grade:
- Classes includes drivers ed, getting driver license
- Banking/Credit card class (understanding credit, etc)
- Introduction to trades, types of jobs, etc.
No 9th through 12th. No more useless knowledge. Boom. Done.
At age 14 the kid graduates high school with these choices:
Go to a College
Get a job
Part Time Job while going to College
Life would be better and less painful to most.
while i rail against the current education system, all i want done is to eliminate the rubbish programs like heather has two mommies, and other garbage social programs, and get school down to properly teaching reading, writing, math, history, science, and other proper education programs.
what you are suggesting is pure rubbish. as for children graduating and getting a job at age 14, that goes against the child labor laws in this country.

I think schools should have a multi-track system where a child's potential should be determined as early as possible with an emphasis on the child's strengths. Maybe K-5 should be devoted to this. Then at grades 6-8 have the the child in classes tailored to that interest. Finally, at grades 9-12 they fine tune the interest in the direction that allows the full development of the skill or knowledge.
[i'm not an educator so maybe this is wacked-out thinking...]
Well, c'mon.. lets be reasonable here. What good does it do for you to know american history? Do you need it at your job or to pay the bills?
I'd say a good working knowledge of American history is CRITICAL, as well as a familiarity with real-world applied economics (not just propaganda justifying the status quo).
Our current government LOVES an ignorant populace who either work hard and get taxed to death, or enjoy free bennies courtesy of the taxpayer. Without knowing how far the current government has strayed from the small government ideals of the Founding Fathers, we are doomed in trying to take back control and reverse the incredibly destructive policies of the last 30 years.
Even with so many of us KNOWING American history, we are facing HUGE opposition from an all-powerful and abusive Big Government that does nothing but pave the way for Big Business abuses of the working class. Considering that our future holds very little employment for the teeming millions coming out of an incredibly-expensive public school system, at least they should understand how a government that is TOO LARGE, and imposes HUGE bureaucratic and tax costs on business will have an inevitable suffocating effect on the economy.
We need to STOP allowing the media to present "information" that makes the sheeple populace support whatever destructive policies the powers-that-be want to impose next. Turning the school system into a mechanism to analyze the effect of government and policy on the economy can only help us in the future.
I like how we stop educating them before their brains have finished developing and at the height of puberty. Awesomeness
