It's also fascinating that the U.S. is the only place where religiousity and politics are so strongly correlated despite the fact that Jesus himself was pretty ambivalent about the government. Read and discuss if you wish

The problem with this discussion is, "What is the definition of evangelical"? I have spoken to many people who self identify as "Evangelical" but are in fact nothing of the sort at all. When I put them on the hot seat, so to speak, they had no clue at all about the basic beliefs of a Christian.

Unfortunately true.

Evangelicalism is quite obviously conservative, and I say this as an ex-evangelical (now an atheist). The evangelical faith places emphasis on "biblical morality," "traditional family," "old-fashioned values," war to "defeat evil," harsh criminal punishment, public displays of religiosity, self-reliance, accumulation of wealth, anti-abortion, anti-homosexuality, and anti-feminism. How are those values anything but very conservative?

There are left-leaning Christians, but most are not evangelical.

Jesus loves all people. Yet Jesus said we are all in condemnation because of sin. There is none righteous , no not one. It is Christ who paid the price for our sin, and receiving Christ as your savior, one is born of the spirit of God. It is this Holy Spirit that teaches , purifies, and reconciles us to the father. God does NOT HATE the sinner. He hates sin because it destroys his people..

But American Evangelicalism has very little resemblance to true Christianity as described in the bible. Anyone who reads the bible would know this.

I don't see anything Christian about either political party. You have the dems who breed dependency which I think is despicable. You have the repubs who allow for cheap labor to come in to this country and hand out visas like candy in the name of helping businesses(a.k.a CEOs). I am a Christian, I vote republican because they are the lesser of two evils.

At least the repubs will keep the government off my back. I want freedom again. Freedom to choose my health insurance. Freedom to start a business without permits and licenses.

The dems are much too dictatorial to get my vote. I mean they are telling us what light bulbs to use, what inhalers I can buy, and what health insurance. I am not a child and the dems are treating us like a bunch of babies.

Meh. That's just a tad more than a 50/50 split.

Of course, they only interviewed 116,000 people. So the question is, do you feel comfortable extrapolating the data they got to cover what nearly 300 million Americans really think?
