Well as a Christian and a Liberal. I am not surprised with the results. It is by design. The Republicans have been trying to get the Christian groups on their side for a very long time and they have been very successful. They use the wedge issues to pull them in...abortion, gay marriage, christian victim hood, school prayers etc.

Just my personal opinion you can't be a conservative and a Christian. It is simply incompatible with my beliefs. Of course, many other people who believe they are Christians disagree with me.

There's nothing christian about modern evangelicalism in America either.

e: That's seriously a low number. The crosstabs have only 48% of non-Hispanic whites identifying as Republican as well, which is way off. It's much closer to 55-60%

I'm surprised it's ONLY 6 in 10.

I'm VERY surprised. Only 6 out of 10--that's only slightly more than 1/2. The Republican Party caters to the Religious nuts and totally abandons its basic principles of freedom from government interference, and still only slightly more than half vote Republican? Not worth throwing away a consistent philosophy of keeping government out of our lives and our bedrooms.

I say we cut the religious nuts free, and make the Republican Party Pro-Choice, like the majority of Americans. I bet we'd gain FAR more than we lose.

Then, considering how the Democrats are proving themselves as major war-mongers and patsies to the sick Military Industrial Complex, let's adopt a platform to BRING OUR TROOPS HOME and defend our borders, instead of wasting trillions trying to police a world of savages.

Exactly. I'm shocked it's so low. Pretty much all the evangelicals I know vote Republican. I can only think of three that vote Democrat. I would have expected the number to be greater than 90%.

Nine out of 10 Blacks vote Democrat. About 90% of Blacks identify as Christian with about 50% claiming to be Baptist. Yet they overwhelmingly support a party that supports the killing of unborn children, same sex marriage and a whole host of other abominations.

Please explain that as well.

Not much political diversity among the black population in America, is there?

I don't know what Gallup says about the 9 out of 10 blacks that vote Democrat but someone needs to explain to those black people that at the time of the Civil War the Democrats were the ones who fought to maintain slavery. Also, someone needs to tell them about the Carpetbaggers being just about as honest as the Democrats of the day.

Surely those 60% of GOP voters who are so religious can't be too much worse than the blacks who Dems have fooled for so long.

You are so right. Right wing conservatism and Christianity are totally incompatible system of beliefs. To be Republican and Christian is akin to been a prostitute and celibate at the same time.

In 2008 many young Evangelicals voted for Obama..I read that many of them actually had no idea where he stood on abortion.
