That could be one reason.........in work environments where the employer treats employees fairly.however there has been a large shift in employment from manufacturing{blue collar} which has been the stalwart of union membership.now you have the federal government as the single largest employer,also a shift to the small businesses,which in most cases are not unionized.

If you think an on-line vendor is selling because they don't charge tax I think you have little understanding of shopping on-line. Remember most on-line retailers do have shipping which usually exceeds tax by a long shot. At best consumers realize it is about a wash to shop on-line vs in their local market place. Access/finding the desired product is probably the #1 motivator.

Those local retailers often have on-line access as well so your argument seems ineffective.
