and watch the deficit levels come crashing down hard. Why do the baby boomers want such massive amounts of socialist government handouts?

They want them because otherwise many of them will die. They cannot afford health care on their own, private employers have eliminated pensions, and their retirement investments have imploded in this crappy economy. What else do you expect?

Social Security is not a handout since workers paid into the system throughout thier working lives. Medicaid is a state run system to help the disabled and poor people including kids. You want to cut bloat and waste? Cut military spending in half.

Problem is that the liberal left has always, in their desperation to gain, or keep control in various years, bought votes with such as this. We need to steal their thunder, and save this nation from China boating over and taking what is theirs since they're propping up our dollar in a very dangerous way. Dangerous to us, not to them, of course.

So it's my fault that they didn't save for retirement? Typical libs trying to bail out the irresponsible. Too bad if they didn't save themselves. Baby boomers should have worked harder and saved. Socialist free handouts are driving this country into bankruptcy and SS and medicare alone eat up 2/3s of all taxes.

You didn't pay into anything. SS is a pay as you go system, you didn't pay for your own retirement. Sorry, the world screwed you. Life isn't fair, but that doesn't justify a communist socialist program like SS.

Contrary to popular belief, FICA / SocSec IS CHARITY, not a property right.

The entitlements are solely at the discretion of Congress, and regardless of what one paid in taxes, there is no "right" to benefits.

Social Security Online History Pages
There has been a temptation throughout the program's history for some people to suppose that their FICA payroll taxes entitle them to a benefit in a legal, contractual sense. That is to say, if a person makes FICA contributions over a number of years, Congress cannot, according to this reasoning, change the rules in such a way that deprives a contributor of a promised future benefit. Under this reasoning, benefits under Social Security could probably only be increased, never decreased, if the Act could be amended at all. Congress clearly had no such limitation in mind when crafting the law. Section 1104 of the 1935 Act, entitled "RESERVATION OF POWER," specifically said: "The right to alter, amend, or repeal any provision of this Act is hereby reserved to the Congress." Even so, some have thought that this reservation was in some way unconstitutional. This is the issue finally settled by Flemming v. Nestor.

In this 1960 Supreme Court decision Nestor's denial of benefits was upheld even though he had contributed to the program for 19 years and was already receiving benefits. Under a 1954 law, Social Security benefits were denied to persons deported for, among other things, having been a member of the Communist party. Accordingly, Mr. Nestor's benefits were terminated. He appealed the termination arguing, among other claims, that promised Social Security benefits were a contract and that Congress could not renege on that contract. In its ruling, the Court rejected this argument and established the principle that entitlement to Social Security benefits is not contractual right.

Let's reduce our deficits quickly. Cut SS benefits and medicare by half and watch our deficits and interest payments on those deficits plummet almost overnight.

They tried and did save as much as they could, but the only real option to save enough is in the stock market. And we all saw how that one worked out for everyone - if you were in that unlucky period, you really don't have a prayer.. And if you just save dollars and stick them under your mattress, inflation will quickly render them near worthless, so you'll still end up way short. And it's not like employers are giving out pensions like they used to. So how should they have "worked harder and saved harder"? The system puts up obstacles that are hard to overcome.

Unless you're a multi-millionaire, chances are high that YOU are underfunded for the cost of living given your old age life expectancy and will require the same kind of help. So you'll probably know what it's like to be in their shoes soon enough.

i love posts like this. instead of having SS and medicare which people have put big bucks into for 50 years, cut them all off. in other words take their labor and money but then rip them off.
great stuff almost as good as waiting 2 years b4 joe six pack retires and figure out a way to make em quit or fire him. or how bout just refuse to pay the pension after they put in the time?
these are great, but let me tell you about ancient rome, when they tried to not pay their soldiers and police bad stuff happened. games like this, ripping off your key people, will have a cost.
where i would focus my attention is not ripping off teachers social workers and cops, but in stopping politicians from buying reelections by off shoring our jobs and selling us out to DOD war lords. foreign aid alone would pay for SS and medicare.
