I would rank Teddy Roosevelt as a good democrat president not because of his party affiliation, but because of his stands on mulitple fronts in business and ecology.
There have been few Republican presidents in my lifetime that I can say I liked--actually one--Ronald Reagan. I'm old enough to remember Nixon. He would not make it in the party now. He supported a national ban on handguns, imposed anti-free-market wage-price controls in a futile and stupid effort to stop inflation (actually even dumber than Gerald Ford's idea of printing up buttons that said 'Whip Inflation Now' as a way to control inflation. At least Ford's idea was not really damaging).
JFK would probably be a republican today. He was a gun nut and NRA life member. He cut taxes, and was a stalwart anti-commie (he actuallly was somewhat of an ally to Joe McCarthy as a US Senator). Even so, Kennedy had a very high incompetence factor--Bay of Pigs fiasco, etc. I think if JFK had not been assasinated he would have a very different image today, and probably not for the better.
I also respected JFK's speech to "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country"
It seems a lot of the OWS libs seems to have turned that advice around and are asking (demanding?) what their country will do for them.
Truman was a reluctant President; was put in a nearly impossible situation with historic implications and carried the country through it. Liked that he was a straight talking leader, and not a politician (measuring every word for impact and focus grooup approval).
Unlike LBJ, who had a real desire for the top spot beyond being the VP and who viewed his position as a stepping stone to the WH, Truman took on the role as an obligation to his party and the nation, and I believe was more apt to put country before self.
I voted for Clinton both times as well - in 92 after I had family members lose jobs during the Bush 1 admin, and in 96 because - bless his heart - Bob Dole was a great man, but 12-15 years too late to the WH party.
