At what point did the right go completely crazy? Growing up in the 80's I remember the republican party as the the the more sane political party while the left was full of whiny annoying liberals that complained about everything. Well 30 years have gone by and the democratic party hasn't changed as it's still full of whiny annoying liberals that complain about everything but the republican party that used to be somewhat level headed has gone off the deep end so far that it's literally scary. It's become a party of extremists that never shut up about anything.

When did the tides turn

When religious extremists pushing for a theocracy became the party norm.

In my opinion, it was with Reagan and his claim that government itself was the problem and needed to be gone. Not fixed, not problem-solved, not rebuilt to serve the people, but just gone. Short-sighted insanity.

This is a great question. It's been a pretty steady decline. I first noticed they were getting whacky when they wouldn't shut up about Vince Foster in the 90s... back then though, it was still a fringe element who went it for crack pottery. Now, you're average Republican thinks that anyone who believes in science, common sense, government, etc. is a crazy Communist who must be stopped at all costs.

During the Clinton presidency that coincided with the rise of Faux News and the right-wing talk-radiot cabal. But they have overstretched, far worse than the liberals ever did, so they will do a much bigger self-destruct job and feel a greater backlash than the far-left did.

You're exactly what I'm laughing about. Obama isn't exactly what I would call progressive. he's more of a centrist but the crazy right thinks he's some kind of socialist monster. It's comical to listen to some of this nonsense.

I think it is simply the fact that more and more people are waking up to where this country is really headed; and panicing. I think alot of people were in a daze after Bush and some thought it might be a good idea to put someone in the White House that had no experience running anything just for a change. Well now that the "change" is out in the open, many people are running scared. Since there is no viable third party, you have the Democrats and- everyone else who wants Obama out. Some are the same level headed Repubs, some are not, then some are crazies. There are all types. But if you don't want Obama you pretty much have to climb on the Republician wagon whether you want them or they want you- or not.

Part of Obama's campaign strategy will be to highlight the fringe (crazies) and associate them with whoever the Republician canidate ends up being. He will have most of the media following his queue as well. We have been promised a Billion dollar + campaign from Obama and I have no doubt we will see what it can do.

He has no real record to run on as of yet so it will be the Die Hard Liberals and whoever else they can grab with the Billions of campaign dollars that will surely come. Maybe we will be lucky and he will decide to invest 500 Million of it in a "green" energy company like his pals at Solyndra?
