Secretary Panetta argues that cooperation between Israel and the United States is now at “unprecedented levels.” Indeed, the Obama administration has significantly upgraded the relationship on a number of fronts, including missile defense, counterterrorism coordination and military supply. At the same time, however, its political priorities vis-Ă -vis Israel have put the Jewish state in greater danger. To wit:

Overall, it's unseemly for American politicians or presidential candidates to spend so much time worrying about one particular foreign nation. It brings to mind George Washington's caution against "foreign entanglements." Newt and others would do well to re-read those speeches, along with some of the writings of Thomas Jefferson and also John Quincy Adams.

Not true regarding our deserved interest in Israel.
How are we supposed to do that when Jewish lobbyist groups have a literal stranglehold over our government to the point our President and Congress are scared to say anything negative about them?
What Americans don't realize, or most don't, is the incredible influence Jewish groups have over all facets of our society. You will never see a mainstream Presidential candidate speak out against Israel because the Jewish groups would destroy their career and chances of being elected.
I think you mean Zionist not Jewish. Not all Jews are pro-Zionist. Many American Jews are anti-Zionist or ambivalent about Israel.
It would be great if the American Council for Judaism had great influence over all facets of our society.
Israel is God's nation (country) and our ally and our friend! And, you are WRONG! They're not a hindrance.
Israel in the past was our ally and friend. It would be hard to say they are now.
