I just heard a talk show host say if you have a gripe, take it to Congress. (as opposed to Occupying things)

But how much power do the bottom 50%, say, or the bottom third have?

Sounds like a bad joke to me.

If they all vote they have 50% of the power to elect at any office

How many times have you ever met your congressman, or emailed him for that matter?

In theory the bottom has all the power as they have the ability to vote in and out the politicians. The flip side is the large corporations and other puppet masters know how lead the people and present their product, advertise it, and sell it so the bottom votes to give the elites what they want.

If the bottom 50% wants power, the bottom 50% can start contributing to the system. Because right now, all the bottom 50% does is ***** about how the top 8% doesn't pay enough in order to subsidize the bottom's lifestyle.

Yep , and the people fall for it every time. Let me make a easy prediction that I have a 99.9% of hitting " the majority of incumbents will win re election ". That is amassing considering the shape are country is in but who ever said democracy is logical. As the great American intellectual said " stupid is what stupid does" Forrest Gumps mother.

Look at this new book ("Republic Lost") - author was on Daily Show a couple of day ago. Some points:
- only 0.05% of people (usually rich) max out what they can donate (and this is who the elected people listen to the most)
- only 0.26% even give more than $200

So, less than 0.5% - and this is not necessarily the OWS's 1% - sets the agenda for the elections. Congressmen supposedly spend over 70% of their time chasing these donations.

The rest of the population can be split based on ideology, guns, gays, etc.

Author goes on to explain why it is not in the interest of congress (D or R) to simplify anything. Complexity gives congressmen power since they are the only ones who can change anything. And PACs / lobbyists have to pay to play. Congress (R, D) is the most corrupt self-perpetuating system around.

Obviously, a small fry is absolutely powerless - unless he calls in a sizeable donation (to be in the top 0.05% category).

It was quite an interesting interview - here is a video link:

What do you think this is, a democracy?

If you want any say in this country, you better have loads of money and lobbyists to buy off the politicians. Otherwise your congressman or woman won't give you the time of day. So by definition, unless you are in the 1% you don't have any real power.

But it's the PEOPLE who vote those corrupt Congressmen/women back into office over and over and over.

We deserve everything that is coming to us.
