Most, not all, people who cease smoking gain ten to fifteen pounds. Even without a greater intake of food this will happen because Nicene stimulates the metabolism.

On top of that, the appetite increases.

This weight often stays with the person.

Not that I am blaming not smoking for the excess weight of Americans, but it must contribute to the problem.

I thought people in Seattle (where the ferries tend to be, no?) were in generally great health and thinner than most Americans.

How do you figure that mandating Washington state ferry capacity at 2,000 is a "basic freedom" ?

Is the government really restricting your freedom by revising the max capacity to 1,750?

FAA bumped standard airline passenger weights used for weight and balance purposes to 184 lbs a few years back as well.

My thinking is just that this does impose a public cost, and projecting forward, it is likely that controls on behavior will be imposed in efforts to control costs.
There's a reason airplanes take baggage based on weight.
There's a reason your vehicle has a GVWR.
There's a reason the tire in your vehicle has a load rating which ain't based on number of passengers on-board.
There's a reason why an elevator has a load rating.

Why shouldn't a boat be rated on weight as its carrying capacity?

They had to dig out the It's a Small World ride at Disney years ago. I guess that was more government workers blowing smoke. Oh wait, no that's your conspiracy theory mentality.

While I would like to see the numbers to your claim, it is probably their better genes, diet and general lifestyle (activity) that may be helping... so far. Besides, the USA has had a head start in that regard, since the 1980s. The Asian countries have only recently begun to adopt the idiocy.

Wall-E world, here we come!
